Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Review
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is the latest addition to Samsung’s Galaxy M series. This is the successor of the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G and comes with significant improvements. The Galaxy M53 5G has a lot to offer in terms of specs.
In addition to the high-resolution 108MP camera, the phone has a big 6.7-inch super AMOLED display, a MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset, and a large 5,000mAh battery. All of this looks really nice but the real question is how does it perform in everyday usage?
I used the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G for a while and here’s what I thought of it.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Design and Build
Starting off with the design, the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G has a very basic and minimalist design. I really liked that Samsung has gone with this clean look instead of the fancy glossy phones with bright colours.
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G features a shiny matte-finish polycarbonate back panel. The device I have is in blue colour. Even though it has a matte texture, it doesn’t look dull and shines when light falls on it. At the bottom is the Samsung logo, accompanied by a curved camera island at the top.
The back is prone to fingerprints and I had to clean it every 10 minutes. I would suggest you to use the phone with a cover to avoid such inconvenience.
The phone is quite sleek being 7.4 mm thick and feels very light in hand at just 176 grams. Coming to the buttons and ports, the left side is clean and just has the SIM card slot.

The right side has the power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner along with the volume buttons over it. The bottom has a type-C port, speaker grill and primary mic while the top is clean.
The Samsung Galaxy M53 misses out on the headphone jack which makes the phone more resistant to water but disappoints the wired earphones users. Overall, it feels like a high-end phone when you hold it. When it comes to design, Samsung gets full marks.
Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Camera
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G comes with a quad-camera setup on the back. This includes a 108MP primary lens paired with an 8MP ultrawide sensor, a 2MP macro sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, you get a 32 MP selfie camera for selfies and video calls.
The primary camera takes great shots in bright daylight. The images are rich in colours and have a good amount of details in them.
To be honest, there aren’t nearly as many added details as you would think when switching to the 108MP mode, therefore it is best to go with the usual setting instead.
However, performance suffered significantly in low-light environments. While the night mode helped to brighten the photos, it also added significant noise to the photo.
The ultra-wide camera was average at best, resulting in blown-out photos with a bunch of unnecessary blurring and lost details.
The low-resolution 2 MP macro sensor captures images that don’t look any good. The details are there but the overall image is not worth uploading anywhere.
It also features a 2MP depth sensor for taking bokeh shots, but I don’t think it does a particularly good job. The edge detection was more of a hit and miss.

Talking about the front camera, the selfies taken were quite good and packed with details. I could zoom in and clearly see my hair strands and dust particles on my T-shirt. The colours also looked good and natural.
The portrait mode was just okay. It has a tough time detecting the subject and blurring the background. There’s a Fun Mode in the camera app where you can use the Snapchat filters to take some funky shots.
Coming to the videos, both front and back cameras on Samsung Galaxy M53 5G can record up to 4k videos at 30fps and 1080p videos at 60fps. There is a super steady mode which will help your videos to stay steady on the go. You can also record super slow-motion videos that can go up to 240fps.
Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Battery and Charging
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G packs a big 5000mAh battery that supports 25W fast charging technology. I found the battery performance to be great which lasted two days for me.
My usage included some Instagram scrolling, watching videos on YouTube, taking some camera shots and playing multiplayer games for half an hour. Even for heavy users, the phone can easily last a whole day.
I have to say that Samsung has done a good job with battery optimization. You also get power-saving mode which further extends the battery life.

Now coming to charging, although the phone can fast-charge at 25W, Samsung has stepped back from providing a charger with the phone. The phone comes with a type-C to type-C cable which I think won’t work with the old charger in your house.
I used an 18W charger which took around 2 hours to fully charge the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G from 0 to 100 per cent. Now, a 25W charger might cut down some minutes but still, you would need to leave the phone on charging for an hour at least.
Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Display
It’s now time for display! We know how seriously Samsung takes the display part. The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G comes with a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display which is absolutely stunning to look at.
The display features a 120Hz refresh rate which offers a super smooth experience. You can choose between the standard 60Hz refresh rate or the high 120Hz refresh rate. Unfortunately, there is no option for an adaptive refresh rate.
The display is vivid and shows perfectly accurate colours. I thoroughly enjoyed watching videos and playing games on the phone. You can choose between two colour modes in the display settings: Vivid or Natural. I personally used the Vivid mode which shows little punchy colours compared to the Natural mode.
Talking about the brightness, the phone features a peak brightness of 420 nits. It was bright enough for indoor use but the outdoor experience was not the best. On top of that, it is protected by Gorilla Glass 5.

Finally, there is a punch-hole camera on the top of the display which is pretty small and does not interrupt while watching movies or playing games.
The phone misses out on the HDR 10 playback support on Prime and Netflix which was really disappointing to see at this price point.
Other than that, there are no complaints regarding the display and it performs as good as expected from Samsung.
Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Performance
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G comes backed by a MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset which is a turn from its predecessor using the Snapdragon series of SoC. Nonetheless, the Dimensity 900 performs really well and handles everything you throw at it.
The processor is paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The phone comes with a RAM Plus feature which further adds up to 6GB of RAM using the internal storage. As a result, multitasking was a breeze and the phone could handle all the apps in the background.
During my usage, the phone ran pretty well and I did not face any lags. The apps opened quickly and navigating through the UI was also smooth. Thanks to the 120Hz high refresh rate.

Coming to gaming, I tried a few popular titles including BGMI, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Asphalt 9. All the games could run in high graphic settings. Talking about BGMI, the game ran flawlessly on Smooth graphics with an Extreme frame rate without any lags or jitters. It went up to HDR + Ultra settings but the performance was not the same anymore.
Asphalt 9 could also run in High quality and showed no signs of lags. Although gaming for a prolonged period did get the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G to warm up a little. There’s a dedicated Game launcher where you can get details regarding your gaming sessions.
Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Software and UI
Samsung Galaxy M53 5G runs on One UI 4.1 which is based on Android 12. The UI is quite simple and easy to use. There are a lot of customization options like you can change the font size and style from the settings.
Since it is an AMOLED display, you also get the Always On Display feature. You also get Edge panels in the display settings where you can wipe the edge of the screen which shows some shortcuts and additional information.

The phone also comes pre-installed with Samsung Free where you can watch free TV channels, read news and play games. In addition, the UI has a number of unique features, like smart widgets, camera enhancements, secure folders, and a standard keyboard with AR emojis.
The phone offers the majority of the features that users have come to expect from Samsung’s mid-range phones. When it comes to software support, Samsung shines, with its phones receiving updates on a much more frequent basis than ever before with me getting an update while writing this review.
Samsung Galaxy M53 5G comes with a considerable number of bloatware which includes Dailyhunt, BYJU’s, Moj, ShareChat, and MX TakaTak among others. Good thing that all these unnecessary apps can be uninstalled from the phone.
Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G comes with a single bottom-firing speaker which works as expected. The output was pretty loud with little to no distortion. I could easily watch videos on YouTube and play music and the audio output was good.
However, a stereo speaker setup would be really good at this price. The company has also removed the 3.5mm headphone jack which adds to the sorrow.

Coming to connectivity, the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G features Wi-Fi 802.1, GPS, Bluetooth v5.20, USB Type-C, and of course 5G. The phone supports 12 bands for good 5G connectivity: N1(2100), N3(1800), N5(850), N7(2600), N8(900), N20(800), N28(700), N38(2600), N40(2300), N41(2500), N66(AWS-3), and N78(3500).
Talking about biometrics, the phone comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which works well. The scanner unlocks the phone quickly in just one tap. You can also use face unlock which works good as well.
With a beautiful design and vibrant display, the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is a joy to use and delivers smooth performance and good camera quality. I was satisfied with the overall performance. It didn’t show any signs of slowing down and stood tall with my everyday tasks.
The battery can also easily handle day-to-day work. There are also some shortcomings like the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo speakers. Additionally, it might not be suitable for heavy gaming but light gaming is handled easily.
The absence of a charger in the box will put some extra bucks on your shopping list. For its price of less than Rs 25,000, the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G delivers good looks and performance.
