Motorola is striving its push into the mid-range 5G market and its latest entry Moto G62 5G follows the same trend. It features the same design as other Moto G smartphones.

With a starting price of 17,999, Moto G62 aims to take on the under 20k 5G segment. It features a potent Snapdragon 695 chipset, a decent battery and seems like a future-proof device.

On paper, the Moto G62 5G appears to have a lot to offer. However, will it be enough to hold off strong competition from other big players on the market? We’ll answer that and many more of your questions in this Motorola Moto G62 5G review.

Moto G62 5G Design and Build

There is nothing new about the Moto G62’s design. It is similar to other Moto phones in terms of looks and build quality. It has a lightweight plastic body that weighs only about 184 grams. The phone is also quite thin at 8.6 mm.

Generally speaking, it feels nice in the hand, but when held for extended periods of time, the sharp corners may dig your hand. Although the back of the phone is fairly resistant to fingerprints, it is prone to smudges. The phone also comes with a TPU case if you want to avoid those smudges.

Curved edges on the back provide a more comfortable grip with an oval camera unit that houses three camera lenses. The front bezels on this phone are quite large with a punch hole camera cutout in the top centre.

Talking about the ports and buttons, the right side of the phone houses the power button and volume buttons. The left side has the SIM card tray. The button side holds a 3.5 mm audio jack, type-C port and speaker grille, whereas the top side has the secondary speaker.

Additionally, the phone is IP52-certified, giving you some degree of protection. Overall, the design of the G62 isn’t particularly special, but it’s also not so bad either. It’s lightweight and fits well in the hand.

Moto G62 5G Camera

The Motorola Moto G62 5G features a triple camera setup on the back. This includes a 50MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide sensor and a 2 MP macro lens. The front of the phone gets a 16MP for taking selfies. This camera setup is exact same as seen on the Moto G52 and G42.

When it comes to the primary lens, it takes good pictures in daylight. The shots are well-detailed and appear sharp. I found the colours to be on the cooler side except for the pictures of grass and trees which were more accurate.

Moto G62 5G Camera

Low light images were just not good, with a lot of grains and washed-out colours. Surprisingly, the Night mode does not make the images any better.

Changing to an ultra-wide angle camera didn’t help with the details. The colours were dull, and the exposure was slightly too low.

I didn’t see much point in using the 2MP macro camera because it only takes soft, unusable images. Since there is no sort of stabilisation, taking usable macro shots gets even more challenging.

Portrait shots on this phone look good, with nice edge detection, however there is a little bit of softness in the shots. I would have preferred slightly more accurate skin tones, as people frequently appear a little too reddish.

With the proper lighting, selfies taken with the 16MP front camera were fairly decent. The selfies were nice and detailed with good colour accuracy.

You can record 1080p video at 60fps using the main camera, while the front camera can record 1080p videos at 30fps. The video quality was pretty good in daylight and the details were present. However, things take a hit during low-light recording.

As far as the cameras go, I would say there is much room for improvement. The current cameras on the G62 are just not up to the mark for a phone costing 18K.

Moto G62 5G Battery and Charging

The Motorola Moto G62 5G packs a beefy 500 mAh battery with 20W charging support. Let me tell you straight, the battery backup on G62 is really impressive. You can easily get over a day of usage from it.

I got about 6-7 hours of screen on time with my casual use. This included some Instagram scrolling, playing games, watching videos on YouTube and making some calls. A light user can even use the phone for two days without reaching out to the charger.

Talking about the charger, the phone ships with a 20W charging adaptor which is very slow considering the big battery. It takes even more than 2 hours to fully charge the phone from 0 to 100 per cent, which is really a letdown.

20W falls way behind if we compare it to the 67W fast charging support on the Poco X4 Pro 5G (review) or Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus (review), which fall in the same price range. Moto should have at least given 33W fast charging support like the OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite.

Moto G62 5G Display

The Motorola Moto G62 features an FHD+ 6.5-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. Moto, for some reason, has decided to go with an LCD display rather than an AMOLED panel, something which will not be appreciated by many. The good thing is that you get a 120Hz refresh rate with 600 nits of peak brightness.

Moto G62 5G Display

Even though it’s not the brightest display out there, it is just bright enough to be used under direct sunlight. The LCD panel does a good job because the image quality is good and the colours are true to life and vibrant. The display is reasonably sharp and has good viewing angles.

It obviously cannot compete with the colours and deep blacks of an AMOLED display, but it is otherwise sufficient.

Moto G62 Display

You can feel the smoothness of 120Hz while you are scrolling through your feed or playing games. The display includes a Widevine L1 certification, allowing you to stream HD content from Amazon Prime and Netflix.

Panda glass is used on the front to protect the display, which is equivalent to Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Moto G62 5G Performance

The Motorola Moto G62 packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset which is paired with up to 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB storage. Talking about day to day performance, the Moto G62 runs flawless and without any lags.

Starting with real-world usage, the Motorola G62 handled most tasks admirably, including my social media scrolling, calling, watching videos and texting on WhatsApp. Multitasking was also a breeze and I didn’t face any issues or lag while using multiple apps.

Moto G62 5G Performance

Now it was time for some gaming. I played a couple of popular titles like COD Mobile and Asphalt 9. Both the games ran pretty smooth on medium settings. COD Mobile ran on HD graphic settings with High frame rates. There were just minimal shutters here and there with no noticeable frame drops. Asphalt 9 ran on 30fps but the gameplay was smooth and enjoyable.

To push it even further, I tried playing Apex Legends Mobile on HD graphics and High frame rate settings. The game was quite laggy with constant frame drops. I even tried to lower the settings but the condition was similar.

After playing for an hour, I could notice the phone getting hot on the backside. There’s also a game mode dubbed as Gametime which gives you some options like boosting the game performance, blocking notifications and calls, and more.

Overall, Moto G62 is good for normal use and you can do some casual gaming but don’t expect much from it.

Moto G62 5G Software and UI

The Moto G62 5G runs on MyUI skin which is based on Android 12. It provides a similar experience to stock Android. The user interface is simple and uncluttered. The best thing about the MyUI is that there is a minimal amount of bloatware, unlike other UIs in the market.

Moto G62 5G Software

You can customise and personalise the user interface as per your needs. Motorola has also added a bunch of useful features that we’ll discuss below.

The first is Personalization, which lets you play around with fonts, app icon layout, icon shape, accent colours, and themes. The more useful features, on the other hand, involve gestures. The classics are doing karate chop to turn on the LED flashlight or twisting your wrist to start the camera app.

Moto G62 UI features

The Attentive display feature keeps the display using the front camera to detect a face, preventing the screen from going dark while you are reading an article. You can also use the volume buttons to skip tracks by pressing and holding them.

The company promises to deliver two years of major OS updates and three years of security updates.

Moto G62 5G Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics

Coming to the audio department, the Moto G62 5G packs a stereo speaker setup with Dolby Atmos support. Even at loud volumes, it provided crystal-clear audio with little to no distortion.

Moto G62 stereo speakers

The phone comes with 5G connectivity and support of 12 5G band0s. These include n1, n3, n5, n7, n8, n20, n28, n38, n40, n41, n77, and n78. Other connectivity options include dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.1, and GPS. Sadly there is no support for NFC.

Lastly, you get to see a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which quickly unlocks the phone. The scanner was reliable and quite responsive as well. You can also use the face unlock feature.

Verdict

The Motorola Moto G62 5G is a decent phone packing necessary specs like Snapdragon 695 chipset, a 120Hz display and support for 12 5G bands. The phone offers a decent battery backup with stereo speakers for a good multimedia experience.

The UI is clean with no extras which makes it easy to use. However, the back camera setup is unimpressive, and it lacks an appealing design. Moreover, the 20W charging speed seems slow compared to what the competition is offering.

All things considered, the Moto G62 5G is a decent option if you’re looking for a casual future-proof smartphone. Otherwise, you can also take a look at Poco X4 Pro 5G or Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus for a better value for money experience.
