When Redmi’s Note series releases in India, the excitement and hype are at an all-time high. There’s a reason behind this, obviously. After all, the Redmi Note series is one of the country’s most well-known brands. It is responsible for a significant portion of Xiaomi’s volume. More crucially, the Redmi Note series has expanded to include a range of SKUs and titles, each with a different pricing point. And it’s for this reason that the introduction of the Redmi Note 11T 5G feels a bit underwhelming.
It has a powerful chipset with 5G connectivity, a massive battery, a nice display, and a set of cameras that are decent. So far, this has been the case for almost every 5G phone in this category. The fact is that the 5G tag that brands are chasing comes at a cost, and that cost is still avoidable in India in 2021.
Chipsets with an integrated 5G modem aren’t cheap because 5G is still a relatively new technology. The same is true for this one since the Redmi Note 11T 5G seems to have a much higher starting price of Rs 16,999. Let’s see if it is worth its asking price or not.

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T 5G Introduction

The Redmi Note 11T 5G is the latest phone in Xiaomi’s successful Redmi Note series to launch in India. The plot twist is that, while the Redmi Note 11T 5G appears to be the first phone in the Redmi Note 11 series, it is basically an upgrade of the Redmi Note 10T 5G, which was released just a few months ago. This time, the Redmi Note 11T 5G comes with a dual-camera setup on the back, 5G support, and a starting price of Rs 16,999. Despite the various issues that the industry faces today, Xiaomi manages to jam-pack its Redmi devices with good—often better than the rest of the world—hardware and offer them at very affordable price in India. The Redmi Note 11T 5G is no different. Now the question arises, is this a good upgrade to spend your money on?

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T 5G Design and Build

The Redmi Note 11T 5G looks like any other handset in this price range. It has a matte texture on the polycarbonate frame and back. While I would not really say the company has sacrificed on the phone’s appearance and feel, the Redmi Note 10 Pro from earlier this year felt significantly better in the hand. The smartphone is rather hefty, and the back isn’t really premium.
It is, however, IP53 certified, so you should be fine with the rare spill or splash. The back camera module is designed in the same way as the previous-generation Note phones. From a distance, the camera array looks to have four lenses.
However, a closer look reveals that the phone just has two cameras and an LED flash. The two extra rings with the red dot and AI branding were not required and only serve to give the appearance of a quad-camera setup.
The side-mounted fingerprint scanner is one area where Xiaomi excels. It’s lightning-fast and accurate. Xiaomi offers a protective case in the box, however, although it does protect the phone, the TPU texture makes it rather slippery. It’s worth noting that Redmi Note 11T 5G already has a plastic screen protector applied to the display. As previously said, 4G phones in this category are often better made or simply feel better to hold and use.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T 5G Display

There’s no getting around the fact that India is a spec-driven market. Any phone with the name AMOLED on the spec sheet automatically grabs more attention than one with an IPS LCD display. This was noticed by manufacturers, who offered phones with AMOLED panels even in the sub-20,000 pricing range this year. Both the Redmi Note 10 and Realme 8 series have OLED displays, but Xiaomi went a step further by providing the Note 10 Pro and Pro Max a 120Hz refresh rate.
Of course, with the price increase that comes with a 5G chipset, an OLED display in this pricing range is out of the picture. This is why all 5G phones under Rs. 20,000 come with an LCD display. The Redmi Note 11T 5G likewise sports an LCD display with a refresh rate of 90Hz. The display panel used has a variable refresh rate, which implies the display will range from 30Hz to 90Hz.
While navigating through lists and social media feeds, the smooth refresh rate undoubtedly improves the experience. When scrolling swiftly, however, I did notice a tiny stutter. The display on the Redmi Note 11T 5G will impress you if you consume a lot of content on your device. Of course, it lacks the deep blacks and vibrant colours of an OLED display, but movies and games on this big screen are definitely enjoyable. In my opinion, this is one of the finest display panels you’ll get on a mid-range 5G phone.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T 5G Performance

Now, let’s go over the specifications. The Dimensity 810 gives the Redmi Note 11T 5G a significant performance boost over the Note 10T’s Dimensity 700. Given the phone’s price point, this processor is based on the 6nm manufacturing node, which really is impressive. It is available in three RAM and storage configurations: 6GB / 64GB, 6GB / 128GB, and 8GB / 128GB, with UFS 2.2 storage.
The performance improvements are noticeable on a daily basis, with the smartphone working smooth. The chip is fully used by the MIUI 12.5 OS, which is based on Android 11. During my time with the phone, I did not notice any animation lags or have to wait longer than usual for any app, including graphic-intensive games.
In terms of gaming, the Redmi Note 11T 5G handled my hourly sessions of Call of Duty Mobile throughout the day with ease. “Medium” graphics with “High” frame rates were the highest settings I could get. Similarly, Shadow Fight 4 Arena’s graphics were set to Medium by default, but I was able to have a nice gaming experience at the maximum settings. BGMI can be played on the Redmi Note 11T at Smooth + Ultra settings, and I was able to maintain a frame rate of 40fps for the most part. There are a few minor lags here and there, but this is a problem with all phones in this price range.
Because India does not yet have 5G networks, there is no way for me to evaluate the device’s 5G potential. Everything has a snappy feel to it, especially with the 90Hz refresh rate. This is without a doubt the phone’s best feature, and it’s for this reason that you’re paying the higher price.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T 5G Software

The Redmi Note 11T 5G, of course, uses Xiaomi’s own interface, MIUI. You receive MIUI 12.5 out of the box, which is based on Android 11. Those who have used MIUI before will find that the experience is similar on this phone. The MIUI 12.5 software is currently one of the most refined experiences available on a phone in this price range. It has a visual style that is evocative of iOS while remaining unique. MIUI includes a number of handy features such as app lock, a second space, game mode, gestures, and more. It does, however, have its own set of characteristics. Not only can you change the icon packs and fonts, but almost every aspect of the interface can be changed to your taste; just go to the theme store and get started.
Xiaomi deserves credit for reducing ads from the user interface. I also didn’t see any of the vulgar notifications that were part of the MIUI before the country’s ban on the MIUI browser app. MIUI is one of my favourite operating systems because of the way it looks and all of the useful features. You’ll have a great experience without having to jump through hoops if you’re cautious when setting up the device and know what to uninstall/disable. Interestingly, Xiaomi has not mentioned how many Android updates the phone will get, but as usual, the MIUI and Android security updates will be delivered on a frequent basis.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T 5G Cameras

Xiaomi should be praised for prioritising quality over quantity in the camera department. The Redmi Note 11T 5G has the least cameras we’ve seen on a Redmi Note in a long time, with only two in the rear and one in the front. But I believe that’s good news because none of these cameras appears to be there just to fill in the gaps — there’s a 50-megapixel main camera and an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera on the back, while a 16-megapixel camera handles selfies.
Despite the high megapixel count, the photographs taken in the daytime appear to be lacking in detail. When you zoom into specific sections of the photographs taken by this phone, you may see a watercolour effect.
While the colours of flowers and leaves appear to be pretty natural, the software appears to have handled the sky’s colour in an unnatural way. Although it was a cloudy day in Delhi when I took these photos, the sky was not quite as grey as the pictures show. The 8MP ultra-wide camera is no exception. However, Xiaomi deserves credit for having an ultra-wide camera, which is far more helpful than a macro or a depth sensor. Unfortunately, it isn’t very detailed, and the photos appear to be very dull. You should be able to get some usable images with appropriate lighting and a photo editor. When the light dims, the camera’s performance is more or less the same. However, there is significant detail loss, particularly in the corners.
Although Night Mode is useful, the phone was struggling to lock focus on a nearby object on a few instances. When there isn’t a lot of light, all of the shadows tend to be crushed. The rear cameras are, on the whole, usable.

However, the selfie camera of the Redmi Note 11T 5G appears to be rather good. It did an excellent job adjusting my skin tone and lighting in the background as well as on my face. The picture was well-exposed, even with bright sunlight coming from behind it, and nothing was completely blown out. Portrait Mode’s edge detection appears to be accurate as well. You’ll be happy with this phone if you take a lot of selfies or create short-form content with the front-facing camera.
The back camera can record videos at up to 1080p 60fps, while the selfie camera can only shoot at 1080p 30fps. The cameras on the Redmi Note 11T are good for a smartphone that costs less than Rs. 20,000.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T 5G Battery

The 5,000mAh battery of the Redmi Note 11T 5G easily got me through a day of social media, watching youtube, browsing, messaging, and around an hour of video calls. The battery will naturally drop faster if you play intensive games. With moderate usage, the Redmi Note 11T 5G should provide roughly 7-8 hours of screen-on time.
Even if you run out of battery, the bundled 33W fast charger will make sure that you don’t have to wait too long without using your smartphone. Another area where Xiaomi hasn’t compromised, unlike some other brands in this class with 5G phones. It takes roughly an hour to charge the phone, which, while not lightning fast, is more than enough considering the large of the battery.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T 5G Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics

Another nice feature of the Redmi Note 11T 5G is the dual speaker system. These aren’t high-quality speakers, but they’re loud enough for watching YouTube videos and web series on Prime Video. However, the sound quality is tinny, so you’ll be better off using headphones.
Superfast 5G, Wi-Fi, GPS, and USB Type-C are among the Redmi Note 11 5G’s connectivity options. The fingerprint scanner in Redmi Note 11T 5G is built into the power button and unlocks the phone really fast.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T 5G Pros & Cons

    • 7 5G Bands
    • 3.5mm Audio Jack
    • Good battery life

    Cons

    • Average  Cameras
    • Plastic Body

    • No 4K video support
    Verdict

Not only has it been a little late to the “affordable 5G” party, but its first few attempts, including the new Redmi Note 11T 5G, have been and continue to be far from perfection. Getting a 4G phone around the end of 2021 or possibly the beginning of 2022 makes more sense in my opinion. 5G isn’t even available in India now, and there’s no estimate for when it will be. Overall, the smartphone provides good performance, long battery life, and quick charging. The camera, though it is nice, falls short on my expectations. Perhaps I have higher expectations for a Redmi Note phone in general.
If you need a phone immediately, the Redmi Note 10 Pro is still a great option and offers a better overall package than the Redmi Note 11T. If you’re looking for a 5G phone and don’t mind the flaws outlined in this review, the Redmi Note 11T 5G is a good choice indeed.
