I have been using the Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active for the past two weeks, and here’s my detailed review of it.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active Design And Build

The Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active has a metal body and a huge display that covers the majority of your wrist. Unlike other watches with curved screens, Xiaomi has opted for a flat panel with large bezels surrounding it. I have the Midnight Black variant for review, and it is also available in a Matte Silver variant.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active Design

The most annoying thing about the Redmi Watch 5 Active is its strap. It isn’t user-friendly and takes time to get used to. You need two hands to wear the watch, which can be troublesome if you need to adjust the watch in public. Another pain point is the locking mechanism of the buckle, as you first need to struggle to find the perfect locking point and then wrap the remaining part into the rest of your wrist.

This results in an awkward look as you try to fiddle around with the watch. I prefer easy-to-wear straps that can be worn with one hand, like the custom strap on my Galaxy Watch 4.

Thankfully, the strap is comfortable to wear, and I did not get any rashes or feel uncomfortable, which most budget watches will make you feel after a while. Regarding durability, you get an IPX8 rating, meaning the watch has 50 ATM water resistance and can survive occasional splashes.

Ports And Placements

Although no dedicated swim mode exists, you can remove excess water from the watch in the Quick Settings. Regarding ports and placements, the right button acts as the power button, while the left remains relatively clean. The back of the watch houses the heart rate sensor, along with the two microphones and speakers.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active Battery And Charging

The Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active packs a 470mAh battery that lasts a week. During my two weeks of usage, the Redmi Watch 5 Active, I got through the review period without needing to charge the watch, although I did charge it once to test the charging speed. There is also an Ultra Battery Saver Mode if you do need one.

While the company claims 18 days of battery life, it got me through an entire week without needing a recharge, so the actual battery life would be around 10-12 days. You get a magnetic charging cable with the box, but charging the watch takes around 1.5 hours.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active Display

The Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 is one of the few watches I have reviewed with a massive 2-inch display screen. The screen is large enough to cover my entire wrist and gives an immersive experience.

It is perfect for kids or senior citizens who prefer a big screen for easier navigation and readability. The square screen has thick bezels surrounding it, which are interestingly asymmetrical, with the bottom one being thicker than the others.

While watches with AMOLED panels are available for under Rs.3,000, the Redmi Watch 5 has an LCD screen. Its resolution is 320 x 385 pixels, and its peak brightness is 500 nits.

I preferred an AMOLED screen with a smaller screen size, as the LCD screen struggles to light up against bright sunlight. Although the watch is visible indoors, there are some legibility issues outdoors. Since I personally use the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and the Fitbit Sense 2, it took some time to adjust to an LCD screen.

Furthermore, the lack of an AMOLED panel also means you don’t get Always On display functionality, which is disappointing, especially for a watch that costs close to 3K. However, in terms of features you get raise to wake as well as touch to wake which is impressive for a budget watch.

More than 200+ watch faces are available, including 50 customizable ones, which is great. You can also customize and rearrange the widgets on the home screen, which is a nice touch.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active Fitness And Health Features

Tracking your health and fitness is the main reason you buy a smartwatch, and the Redmi Watch 5 delivers well in this aspect. You get various sports modes (140+, to be precise) with auto activity detection. I found this detection helpful as the watch quickly detected that I was walking during my evening walk.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active Fitness Tracking

The watch offers detailed sleep tracking, heart rate, SpO2, stress measurement, female health tracking, breathing exercises, step detection, calorie count and more. During my two weeks of review, I found that the Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active delivered accurate sleep data tracking and step count.

This is important because most budget watches compromise on the fitness aspect, but the Redmi Watch 5 doesn’t. So, if you want a good smartwatch with accurate tracking, the Redmi Watch 5 Active is the way to go.

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active Software And UI

The Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active is one of the few smartwatches with HyperOS. Xiaomi users will feel right at home with the user interface. Swiping up will show you the notifications, while a swipe down will show you the quick settings. Navigating through the UI feels smooth, and unlike other budget smartwatches, there are no jitters or lags.

Software

Furthermore, a swipe right will guide you through different widgets. These include your stats, sleep data, weather, and the last active sports mode. You can also quickly glance at your heart rate, SpO2, stress monitoring, and breathing.

The Redmi Watch 5 Active lets you start a timer or set an alarm, in addition to controlling the music playback. Pressing the home button will take you to the app drawer, while another press will bring you back to the home screen.

In addition, you also get Amazon Alexa support to control smart home apps and ask questions to the virtual assistant. However, Alexa doesn’t allow you to play music or initiate a workout, which is a drawback.

Thanks to the dedicated microphone and speakers, you can easily use the watch to make and receive calls. Since Bluetooth calling is the bread and butter of most budget smartwatches, the Redmi Watch 5 is a decent option for calling as the speaker and microphone quality is clear.

However, I haven’t seen anyone using a smartwatch to make calls, and I don’t use this feature on my Galaxy Watch 4 due to privacy issues and the sheer awkwardness, especially when you make a call in public.

During my review, the Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active received the 3.2.120 update, which claimed to “fix known bugs.” It took only a few minutes to download and install the update on my smartwatch.

Pairing the watch is seamless and easy. Download the Mi Fitness app from the Play Store. Then, scan the QR code and log in to your Xiaomi account, and you are ready.

The only pain point is that you need to create a Xiaomi account, as the app does not let you set up the watch if you don’t have one. There is no guest mode or ability to use the watch without configuring an account, which can be annoying if you are gifting it to your kids or parents.

Verdict

The Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active is an excellent smartwatch if you want a good balance of features and fitness-tracking capabilities. It has a large display, a smooth user interface, and long-lasting battery life.

The main advantage of the Redmi Watch 5 Active is its accurate tracking and easy-to-use UI, which give it an edge over other budget watches. However, you must contend with an LCD panel, large bezels and a somewhat troublesome strap, which you can easily replace with an aftermarket one.
