Review Summary

Motorola’s latest offering is an attempt to re-enter the flagship smartphone market. Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G Review

The Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G is the company’s most recent flagship phone in India. At just under Rs 50K, the Edge 30 Pro is now the most affordable phone which comes with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 on the market. When it comes to the Edge 30 Pro, the company is looking to gain market share in the sub Rs 50,000 price segment, and the company is focusing solely on high-end features such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, two 50MP cameras and one 60MP front camera, and support for 68W fast charging.

That said, this phone is clearly designed for those who prioritise performance over anything. On paper, the Motorola Edge 30 Pro appears to be an amazing value, but is it worth your consideration? Let’s find out in this Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G review.

Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G Price in India and Variants

There is only one variant of the Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G that is available in India, which costs Rs. 49,999 and comes packed with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The lack of expandable storage could be a deal-breaker for some users. The phone is available in two different colours: Cosmos Blue and Stardust White.

Moto Edge 30 Pro Design and Build

Motorola has made its new top-of-the-line smartphone look and feels very simple. Even though its look is simple and ordinary, the way it feels in your hands will leave you amazed. The glass on the phone gives it a unique and lovely appearance. Look-wise, Motorola Edge 30 Pro is very much like its predecessor, Motorola Edge 20 Pro.

The backside is protected by Gorilla Glass 5, while the casing is made of plastic. As a premium product, the plastic frame seems a little out of place and reduces the product’s value. Even though it looks and feels like a high-end device, it is slightly heavier and thicker than the Moto Edge 20 Pro, which had an aluminium body.

The camera unit housing the three lenses doesn’t protrude much from the body. This makes sure the phone doesn’t wobble much when it’s placed on a flat surface. Additionally, the back panel features a matte finish that doesn’t attract any smudges or fingerprints. The only branding you get is a bat logo and a Motorola brand name on the back of the phone. The Motorola Edge 30 Pro has an IP52 rating, which means it should be dust-proof and water-resistant to some extent.

The volume and power buttons are located on the right edge, but somewhat toward the top, which tosses ergonomics into a spin. To unlock the phone with a fingerprint scanner on the power key, you’ll need to use both hands or move your hand slightly upwards, which is inconvenient. The secondary microphone is located on the top of the frame, while the SIM card slot, the primary mic, USB Type-C port, and speaker are located at the bottom of the frame.

Moto Edge 30 Pro Camera

The camera setup of the Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G is somewhat unusual. The Edge 30 Pro includes three high-resolution sensors, the most impressive of which is a 60-megapixel selfie camera. The triple camera setup on the back comprises of a 50MP main camera, and a 50MP ultra-wide camera with a 114-degree field of view which can double as a macro lens and a 2MP macro lens.

Daytime photos were sharp and clear on the Motorola Edge 30 Pro. The photos taken with the primary camera had an excellent dynamic range and were crisp and bright. Photography is smooth and consistent thanks to fast focusing and optical image stabilisation (OIS). Photos taken with the Edge 30 Pro may not be the most detailed images, but they are more than enough for the vast majority of people who will be using them.

Moto Edge 30 Pro Camera review

As we move on to the ultrawide, we’re seeing some excellent results. The images taken during the day are well-lit and had good exposure. The noise level is quite low, and the level of detail is excellent for an ultrawide lens, more like a midrange ultrawide lens.

I was blown away by the camera’s ability to capture such fine details in macro shots. Close-up photos taken with the Moto Edge 30 Pro were clear, and the camera was also able to capture small details with accuracy and precision. The 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens used for macros resulted in a very high-quality image. As soon as I got close enough to a subject, the phone advised me to switch to macro mode.

The Edge 30 Pro is capable of producing some impressive portraits. While the portrait mode does a good job at detecting edges in a frame, it also has the ability to create a bokeh effect for photos.

The camera’s performance suffers in low light. Photos taken in low light weren’t as good, and the phone had difficulty capturing detail in the shadows of the frame. It takes 3 seconds for the app to take a picture at night, but the images aren’t anything special.

The 60-megapixel front camera does a fantastic job of taking selfies. During the day, it captures crisp shots with excellent edge detection. The images taken in low light were also rather good.

The Motorola Edge 30 Pro can record 1080p videos at up to 60fps, 4K at 30fps, and 8K at 30fps with the main camera. For some unexplained reason, the Edge 30 Pro does not offer the option of recording a 4K video at 60fps. During the day, the phone provides good results. The detail is excellent, the zooming appears to be smooth, and the stability is good even at 8K. Even while the 4K video is a little smoother, the 8K video gives significantly better detail throughout the day. The video isn’t choppy, the colours are vibrant, and the focus is accurate. You may also capture 4K videos from the front-facing camera.

Moto Edge 30 Pro Battery and Charging

The Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G comes packed with a big 4,800mAh battery that is capable of reverse charging. Even if it isn’t the largest phone on the market, it will easily last you for at least a day with the help of this phone’s P-OLED panel and efficient chipset. You can also use the battery saving feature to extend the battery life even further. Simply said, the battery life on the Motorola Edge 30 Pro is quite good.

Even if you are a heavy user, the 68W fast charging compensates for this by charging the device incredibly quick. It takes about 40 minutes to charge the battery of Motorola Edge 30 Pro from 0 to 100 per cent. Motorola thought it would be a nice touch to provide a charger with the device, which is very much appreciated. Aside from that, there is support for 15W wireless charging as well as 15W power-sharing.

Moto Edge 30 Pro Display

The Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G has a stunning display that sets it apart from the competition. Motorola Edge 30 Pro has a 6.7-inch AMOLED display featuring a 144Hz high refresh rate. Given that it is a 10-bit panel, the colours are much more vibrant, and the fact that it has a refresh rate of 144Hz means that everything appears and feels extremely smooth during normal use.

Moto Edge 30 Pro Display

The display is large enough with thin bezels. This phone can be a good choice for you if you prefer watching movies or tv shows on your smartphone. It boasts a touch sampling rate of 576Hz, which means that it is extremely responsive to touches. The app can be opened with even the tiniest contact of the fingertip.

It boasts a screen-to-body ratio of 20:9 and supports HDR10+. HD and HDR videos look great on the big screen. All of the details are clearly visible thanks to the vivid, clear, and crisp visuals. Motorola also has a DC dimming option, which helps save power consumption when the brightness is set to low.

With a maximum brightness of 700 nits, sunlight readability is also good. In addition, the display has excellent viewing angles. Motorola has used Corning Glass 3 to protect the front of the phone from damage.

Moto Edge 30 Pro Performance

This is where the Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G shines the brightest! The Moto Edge 30 Pro runs on the latest processor from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. However, despite of early rumours, the current Motorola flagship does not overheat while using this processor. The phone does not become hot even when you’re doing heavy tasks on it.

In terms of the performance itself, it is one of the best I have ever seen. This phone opens even the most demanding apps and games with ease. It is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage. I’ve never really had a problem running a dozen or more apps at once on this phone.

The Edge 30 Pro handled everything from multitasking to playing heavy games like Call of Duty: Mobile, Battlegrounds Mobile India, Genshin Impact, and more with ease. All of the games were running at their highest settings at all times. Simply put, the combination of the chipset and OLED screen makes for one of the most enjoyable mobile gaming experiences.

I didn’t notice any lags or shutters even in long gaming sessions, however, I did notice a tiny rise in temperature, which is normal. People who play games will love the Edge 30 Pro because of its unmatched performance and high refresh rate.

Moto Edge 30 Pro Software and UI

Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G comes pre-installed with Android 12. My UX, the latest user interface from Motorola, is light and clean, with a modern feel and the company’s signature smart features like the double-chopping gesture to turn on the flashlight.

All of the Android 12 UI features are included, including large toggle buttons as well as privacy indicators that let you know when your camera or microphone is being used. There is no bloatware or ads in the UI, unlike some of its rivals. Facebook, Google apps, and a few Motorola apps are all that are pre-installed on the phone.

It’s easy to tell that the software has been well-tuned and responsive. In addition, this phone has quick responsiveness and is perfect for multitasking. You can customise the UI with unique fonts, custom colour accents, icon shapes, and more. There is a scrolling screenshot feature but it isn’t Google’s, and it is instead a custom one.

As an added bonus, Motorola’s Ready For platform is built-in into this phone as well. Using this platform, you may connect your smartphone to a tv or computer and get a desktop overview of its OS on a bigger screen. Motorola promises two years of Android OS upgrades which are Android 13 and 14.

Moto Edge 30 Pro Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics

The audio quality of the Edge 30 Pro is likewise impressive. In addition to stereo speakers, the Edge 30 Pro has Dolby Atmos-enhanced speakers. I like that the sound output is loud, however, it is not as clear as I would like it to be. The use of stereo speakers enhanced the video viewing experience. However, I noticed that the bottom-firing loudspeaker was slightly louder than the top-firing one.

Edge 30 Pro Audio, Connectivity

The Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G sports two Nano-SIM slots and supports dual-5G and dual-4G VoLTE connectivity. It supports 13 5G bands: n1, n3, n5, n7, n8, n20, n28, n38, n40, n41, n66, n77, n78. You get support for Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, 13 5G Bands, NFC, and GPS navigation as other connectivity options.

You get a side-mounted fingerprint reader in-built into the power button. Unlocking the phone with a fingerprint sensor on the power button will require the usage of two hands or a little upward movement in the hand position. However, it was consistent when it came to unlocking the phone.

Verdict

The Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G is an excellent successor to the Edge 20 Pro and brings Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 at the best price on the market. With a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, this phone runs smoothly and quickly. Motorola has set the price of its smartphone lower than the prices of other smartphones with the same processor.

This phone has a great display, a solid camera system, and a good battery life. However, the clean Android interface that Motorola phones offer is what I appreciate the most about them, and this is something we saw on this one as well. Overall, the Motorola Edge 30 Pro is an excellent all-rounder of a smartphone. The fact that there isn’t a telephoto camera makes me a little disappointed.

Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro 5G is easily the best affordable flagship you can buy right now if you have Rs 50,000 to spend on a phone. If gaming is your focus, then you can also take a look at the Asus ROG Phone 5s Pro 5G (review).
