As gamers, most of us love challenging ourselves. The satisfaction of defeating a particularly difficult enemy after hours of trials and tribulations can be highly satisfying. At the same time, the process of fighting these difficult bosses in video games can be tedious. You have to keep trying repeatedly until you figure out their attack patterns and weaknesses for exploitation.

Many games in the modern era have started to take a more open approach. Boss battles now occur with bosses and mini-bosses available through side quests or random patterns if the game allows for a procedurally generated level. However, we all must agree that boss battles are an integral part of video gaming history. After all, they signal the final hurdle before completing a game and gaining a sense of accomplishment. Not all boss battles give you that sense of accomplishment easily, however. Some bring you on the edge of frustration, often leaving you at your wit’s end and a desire to smash your controller or rage quit the game.

These are the bosses that we’ll be covering in this article. Unsheathe your swords, reload your guns, and get ready to check out the most difficult bosses in video games!

Ornstein and Smaugh – Dark Souls

Ornstein and Smaugh difficult bosses in video games

The first Dark Souls game was the spiritual successor to the challenging Demon’s Souls by From Software. In fact, these games set the difficulty standard for most open-world games today. You couldn’t approach the bosses in Dark Souls with just the usual upgrades. You’d have to plan your approach and understand which weapons or tactics were effective against these bosses. No other boss battle has caused a gamer as much frustration as the battle with Ornstein and Smaugh.

Dark Souls is already known as a reasonably challenging game. A single boss battle could take you upwards of 30 minutes to complete. So, when you have to face two bosses in a single fight, it’s never going to be easy. With Ornstein and Smaugh, you’ve got two humongous bosses to kill, without dying after taking a couple of hits. Moreover, when you kill one boss, the other absorbs their partner’s powers. If you’re up for a challenge, this will be one of the toughest you’ll have to face.

Senator Armstrong – Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Senator Armstrong

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is possibly one of the best underrated action games you can play. It doesn’t feature the typical stealth elements in Metal Gear Solid. However, it features a smooth hack and slash gameplay that will keep you engaged for the entire duration of the game. With Senator Armstrong, the game’s final boss, Raiden (the protagonist) certainly has his cyborg hands full.

The Senator is equipped with nanomachines that provide him with ungodly durability and strength. Even with Raiden’s powers at his absolute peak, this match will never be easy. Moreover, he has over 100 per cent of Health Points, making it doubly difficult to take him down. His ranged attacks are easier to dodge, making it easy to dash and attack him when he’s vulnerable. Don’t be fooled, though. This fight will take you quite a few retries to complete.

Marauder – Doom Eternal

Marauder difficult bosses in video games

Doom Eternal is the epic follow-up to the hellish madness of 2016’s Doom reboot. With Doom Eternal, the Doom Slayer returns with better weapons, bigger bosses, and massive bouts of action. Speaking of bosses, the Marauder has been hated by most of the Doom Eternal players since the game was released. What makes this worse is the fact that the Marauder isn’t even a complete boss. He’s just a mini-boss!

However, and unfortunately for us gamers, the Marauder is nearly untouchable, especially in the game’s earlier stages. He’s exceptionally fast for a being of this size, and your attacks won’t even make a dent on him. The only way to beat this boss is to change the way you play the game!

Orphan of Kos – Bloodborne

Orphan of Kos

Bloodborne was one of the first From Software games to change the formula that made Dark Souls so famous. While the Dark Souls series focussed more on a slow, systematic approach to the enemies, Bloodborne encouraged players with an aggressive playstyle. Unfortunately, no matter how aggressive you play, the Orphan of Kos will most likely kill your character tens of times.

Moreover, this creature has both ranged attacks and melee attacks. So, it doesn’t matter if you’re able to keep your distance from him. Either way, a few hits from his attacks, and you won’t survive to see him fall. The Orphan of Kos also has multiple phases, activated after a certain amount of damage is dealt. This means that you’ll have to constantly be on your toes and change your attack patterns to deal with him.

The Former – Control

The Former

We could’ve made this entire list with just the bosses from the From Software games. However, we’re going to focus more on an underrated, demanding boss from a recent game. Control is one of the best games you can play today, without a doubt. Its unique concept is paired with fluid gameplay and moderately challenging enemies. However, The Former is a boss from a side quest that will make you want to break your mouse, keyboard, or the controller in anger.

This being is an interdimensional monster that does two things. Firstly, it directs energy balls towards you, which can be devastating if you’re hit with them. Secondly, it tries to destroy the pedestals and platforms you’re standing on. If you make one wrong move, you could just plummet to your death as well. The environment also adds a fair bit of challenge to this fight. Ultimately, while Control isn’t the most challenging game out there, it does offer one of the most difficult bosses in video games.
