Redmi Buds 5 Specs At A Glance

Before we talk more about the Redmi 5 earbuds, let’s see what on-paper specs look like:

  • Battery: 480mAh+54mAh x 2

Redmi Buds 5 Design And Comfort

The Redmi Buds 5 features a stem-like design with chrome stripes in the middle that give it a stylish look. The Fusion White variant I have certainly has a flashy design that will attract eyeballs whenever you listen to tunes on the go. You can also opt for the Fusion Black and Fusion Purple if you want a more subtle look.

Furthermore, these earbuds not only look good but are also comfortable to wear with a snug fit. Each earbud weighs only 5.3 grams, making them ideal for your long audio sessions.

Redmi Buds Case

The case has a matte finish with a design that looks similar to a small bar of soap. It has curved edges and is slim enough to fit inside your pockets. However, I still have concerns about whether the case will remain dust and stain-free in long-term usage. The case lid is also a bit flimsy, so it is best recommended that you handle it with care.

Moving on, the buds come with silicone ear tips, and Xiaomi also provides extra tips in the box so you can choose the one that fits you best. The earbuds also have an IPX4 rating for sweat resistance, so you don’t have to worry about spoiling them during your intense workout sessions.

The earbuds stay snug in your ears, and I did not face any issues with regard to fit, Although I wouldn’t recommend wearing them in crowded places such as public transport where there is always a chance of these earbuds falling out from your ears.

Redmi Buds 5 Audio Quality

The audio quality of the Redmi Buds 5 offers a bass-heavy experience, making it ideal for those listening to Bollywood songs where there is more emphasis on the bass instead of the vocals. Moreover, the vocals and the mids are dampened, while the treble is sharp, making them suitable for pop songs.

Redmi Buds 5 Audio Quality

The device has 12.4mm dynamic drivers with dual microphones, which are great for voice calls, and the voice enhancement feature provides crisp audio quality during calls. Moreover, this feature also works when you summon voice assistants.

The dynamic range isn’t well-balanced but feels nuanced enough for casual usage. You also get up to 46dB Hybrid ANC (Active Noise Cancellation), which works as advertised. It is good enough to block ambient noises like your ceiling fan and the chattering of commuters in a metro.

However, you will still hear loud noises like vehicles honking or a desert cooler running in the background. Just don’t expect AirPods level of ANC at this price point, and you will be fine.

Redmi Buds 5 Charging

The Redmi Buds 5 packs a 150mAh battery, while the case has a 500mAh battery. These buds can last up to 8 hours on a single charge, and you can enjoy up to 40 hours of battery life with the case.

This is a massive upgrade from 5 hours of battery life and 30 hours of playback time from the Redmi Buds 4. Furthermore, you also get fast charging support via the USB-C port that offers up to 4 hours of listening time with just 10 minutes of charge.

Redmi Buds 5 Features And Connectivity

The Redmi Buds 5 connects via Bluetooth 5.3, and you can get Google Fast Pair support that can automatically detect the earbuds on your smartphone. You can also install the Xiaomi Earbuds app, which is available for both iOS and Android.

Redmi Buds 5 Pairing Process

The pairing and setup processes are pretty seamless, with the entire process on the app taking less than 5 minutes. You can check the battery status, adjust the touch controls, choose from different audio presets or tune the level of noise cancellation.

Regarding touch controls, you can play/pause music, skip tracks, and answer or end calls with single, double and triple taps. Moreover, you can also turn ANC on or off by long-pressing any of the earbuds. However, the implementation of these touch controls leaves a lot to be desired as they are slow to respond and are not intuitive.

Redmi Buds 5 Features

Four different audio presets exist in the app: Standard, Enhanced Treble, Enhanced Bass and Enhanced Voice. The Enhanced Treble and Enhanced Bass options are best for music, while the Enhanced Voice works are more suited for podcasts.

In addition, the Redmi Buds 5 also has dual device connectivity, which is handy for someone like me who constantly switches between different devices. Furthermore, the earbuds can automatically switch between your laptop and smartphone when you receive a call on your phone.

The earbuds support SBC and AAC codecs with an operating range of 10 meters. However, there is no dedicated gaming mode or low latency mode, which is a bit disappointing if you are a professional gamer.

Verdict

The Redmi Buds 5 is a good choice if you are looking for a budget TWS with ANC and dual device pairing support. These earbuds have a premium look, comfortable fit and ANC that works as advertised.

However, the lack of a dedicated game mode and the lacklustre implementation of touch controls are things that Xiaomi needs to fix in the next version. Overall, the Redmi Buds 5 offers excellent value for money for those in the market for a trustworthy pair of earbuds on a budget.
