WhatsApp HD image sharing, as the name suggests, allows users to share images in HD clarity. For now, this feature has only been rolled out to WhatsApp Beta users for Android and iOS. Sharing images in higher definition clarity will now be made a seamless process through the introduction of this feature.
This was one of the most demanded feature requests by users as WhatsApp tends to aggressively compress images shared across conversations, thus taking away a lot of detail and clarity. In other words, it ruined the user experience of sharing images and compromising with finer detail.
According to reports, this feature will work when the user selects a large-sized image, providing the option if the user wants to send it in HD quality or standard quality.
Please know that this feature only preserves the original dimensions of the image and still applies minor compression to it. So sharing images in their original quality is not quite possible.
The only way to share original images across conversations in WhatsApp is to share via file format.

How Would This Feature Work?
This feature will work the moment a user selects a high image quality to be shared. The user will then be presented with the option to select if they want to share it in the default Standard Quality or in HD quality every time they want to share an image in HD quality.
Post sharing the image, the recipient will be informed that the image received from the sender is of ‘Higher Quality’ by a tag attached to the message bubble containing the image, mentioning the use of this feature.
This feature was first rolled out to WhatsApp Beta users on Android. According to reports, the feature was then rolled out to iOS WhatsApp beta users a month later. Expect the feature to come in more devices in a few weeks with an app update.
Users need to ensure that the receiver also has the updated WhatsApp to its latest version containing this feature. Or what may happen is despite the sender uploading the image in HD clarity, the receiver will get a compressed version of it.
