Review Summary

Samsung is dominating the foldable device market, and there is hardly any real competition. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is more of an improvement over the model from the previous year than a major upgrade. It comes with slimmer bezels along with flatter edges, making it feel more premium.

Samsung has tried to significantly improve the Flip experience on its new Galaxy Z Flip 4. Although, the majority of their improvements are internal; the battery capacity and charging speed have both increased. They also worked on the camera system by introducing a bigger main sensor for taking better low-light shots.

However, do all these small improvements make it worth the 90K price tag? Let’s find out in this Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 review.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Review

When it comes to foldable phones, Samsung is and has been leading the market for quite some time. Samsung is placing a lot of money on innovation grabbing the attention of buyers, whether it’s with the Galaxy Z Fold or the Galaxy Z Flip. And following the trend, Samsung has launched its latest Galaxy Z Flip4 in the market.

The phone includes a new chipset, a better main camera, a bigger battery, and a faster charging speed. On top of that, you get feature-rich One UI with support of 4 years of software updates.

I have been using the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 for about a week now and I’ll be sharing my views on the phone in this review. So let’s dig in without any further ado.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Design and Build

There is no denying that Galaxy Z Flip4 looks very similar to Galaxy Z Flip3. In fact, you won’t be able to tell them apart at first look. And that’s because Samsung has decided to refine last year’s design rather than going for a change. I have the graphite colour options with me for the review but there are two other options as well – Pink Gold and Bora Purple.

Z Flip4 Design

The new Galaxy Z Flip4 brings a glass back with a matte finish which makes it quite resistant to fingerprints. The phone has slimmer and flatter sides with a glossy finish, including the hinge. Note that the Flip4 comes with Victus+ protection.

Keep in mind that opening the phone will require two hands, else you are risking the phone to drop. The logo-engraved hinge protrudes less when the phone is folded closed than it did on the previous model.

The most noticeable difference, however, is the slimmer bezels around the inner display. The camera module protrudes a little more this year, possibly due to the new primary 12MP sensor. The cover display is still there, offering you with useful information and some helpful features.

Talking about ports and buttons, the phone has volume buttons along with a power button which doubles as a fingerprint scanner on the right side. The left side holds a SIM tray slot, whereas the bottom houses a Type-C port and mic along with speakers.

We also appreciate having an IPX8 water resistance on the Z Flip 4, which gives you peace of mind it will survive an occasional drop in water or more extreme weather conditions. Just remember that this phone is not protected from dust, and you’d better keep it away from a dusty environment.

I am quite happy that the Flip4 comes with an IPX8 water resistance which protects it from the occasional splash of water or light rain. Just keep in mind that it is not dust-proof, so better keep it away from dusty environments.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 still flaunts a dual camera setup on the back like last year. This includes a 12MP main sensor along with a 12MP ultrawide lens. There is a 10MP selfie camera on the inner display. Cameras on the Flip4 are really good with a bigger primary camera sensor.

The primary sensor takes great shots in daylight. The images were well detailed with punchy colours and good dynamic range. The shots taken with Flip4 were more detailed than Flip3 due to the larger sensor. I can tell so by taking shots of trees and grass which showed more details, although there was no major difference.

The portrait mode took excellent shots. The subject was well in focus and separated from the background with a nice bokeh effect. Coming to the ultra-wide lens, the shots were quite good. The images had good detailing and colour accuracy.

Talking about low light performance, the phone still manages to take impressive shots. The night mode automatically kicks in and you can choose to ignore it. The primary lens took some nice and crisp shots in low light with good dynamic range.

By pressing the power button twice while the phone is folded closed, users can start the camera and use the cover display as a viewfinder. This will let you take the best selfies out there. You can also fold the phone halfway and use it as a tripod to take some good steady shots.

On top of that, there are a ton of software features that enhance camera functionality, such as hand wave shutter, smile shutter, voice shutter, extra trigger button, etc.

 Galaxy Z Flip4 features

Coming to the front, the selfies taken with the 10MP lens were crisp and sharp. The skin tones looked pretty natural. The portrait mode here also does a great job, similar to the main camera.

Both back and front cameras on Galaxy Z Flip4 can record 4K videos at 60 fps. The video quality is just amazing and the support of OIS really helps in stabilising the output. The 4K videos from the main sensor had good details, vibrant colours and excellent contrast.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Battery and Charging

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 packs a 3700 mAh battery inside, which is a big improvement compared to the 3300 mAh on the Flip3. It’s still not a huge battery pack, but thanks to the power-efficient SoC, you get a decent battery performance.

The phone easily lasts a full day of use for a light user. I got about 6 hours of screen on time which is rather good. My usage involved some Instagram scrolling, watching youtube videos and of course, playing games. If you are a heavy user, you will need to plug in the charge by the evening.

Talking about chargers, the all-new Flip4 comes with 25W fast charging support. All you need is a 25W charger from Samsung. It takes about 1 hour and 25 minutes to fully charge the phone from 0 to 100 per cent.

A 30-minute charge will juice up the battery to 50 per cent. It also features 15W wireless fast charging and reverse wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Displays

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 comes with two displays similar to the Fold4. Let’s start off with the main inner display. It features a big 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2640 x 1080 pixels. The panel supports a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1200 nits. The screen gets bright enough for outdoor use, even under direct sunlight.

The adaptive refresh rate lets the display to go as low as 1Hz depending on the content, which helps to save battery. You can set the screen on Adaptive mode (1-120Hz) or just the Standard mode (60Hz) in the display settings.

Galaxy Z Flip4 refresh rate

The AMOLED panel offers stunning image quality with deep blacks and punchy colours, as expected from Samsung. The 120Hz refresh rate helps to offer a smooth scrolling experience. One thing to note is that the crease is still visible if you are using an app with a dark background.

Apart from that, watching movies and playing games was an amazing experience on the phone. You also get HDR10 support on Netflix, so sit back and enjoy good quality binge-watching sessions.

Galaxy Z Flip4 Display quality

Coming to the cover display, there is not much to talk about the 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display. It is just the same as the Flip3 with a 60Hz refresh rate and 260 x 512 resolution. By default, it displays time and date but there are some new widgets and features. My favourite feature is the ability to access Samsung Wallet and send quick replies to messages without unfolding the phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Performance

The Galaxy Z Flip4 gets power from the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. It is paired with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. I have used this chipset in other flagship phones and the performance here is similar to those.

You can use the RAM plus feature to add up to another 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM using the internal storage. Multitasking was not an issue with the phone. I was using Instagram, Chrome and several other apps simultaneously and all of them ran smoothly.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 RAM plus

The Flip4 can do whatever you throw at it without breaking a sweat. The apps load up quickly and run smoothly. I did not notice any kind of lag or shutter. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is a powerful chipset and handles CPU and GPU intensive tasks without any trouble.

However, there is one thing to note here, the phone throttles under load which is not a big deal but I hope this will be fixed with future updates. Talking about gaming performance, I tried a couple of heavy titles, including New State Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile, Asphalt 9 and Apex Legends.

Z Flip4 Gaming Performance

All the games ran smoothly on their highest settings without showing any major lags or frame drops. Call of Duty Mobile could max out at Ultra settings and the gameplay was pretty smooth. Similarly, New State Mobile and Apex Legends could also run at their highest settings without any issue.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Software and UI

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 runs on Samsung One UI 4.1 skin which is based on Android 12. The latest One UI 4 offers a bunch of features and customisation options.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Software

Let’s begin our software experience with the cover screen. The cover screen also has an always-on display feature like the inner screen. Swipes in each of the four directions on the cover display do different things. Swiping up brings up Samsung Pay, whereas swiping down presents you with quick toggles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and more.

Swiping towards the right gives you access to the notifications, while swiping to the left side brings up a list of widgets, including a music player, weather forecast, and more. You also get to see Flex mode, which has been better optimised this time.

Talking about Flex mode, this feature lets you split the screen into two halves when the display is partially folded at about a 90-degree angle. This lets you use two apps simultaneously, like watching a video on YouTube while scrolling through your Instagram feed.

Galaxy Z Flip4 Flex mode

The smartphone comes with Galaxy Themes for the inner display, as well as various widgets and a number of quick settings.

The most impressive thing here is the promise made by Samsung to deliver 4 years of major software updates along with 5 years of security updates. This will take you all the way up to Android 16! Isn’t it great?

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 comes with a stereo speaker setup, one at the bottom while the other one is built into the earpiece. The sound quality is just good and gets the work done. Nothing amazing about it. There is no 3.5mm audio jack to be found.

Galaxy Flip 4 speakers

The Flip4 comes with 5G connectivity with support for 16 5G bands. These include: N1, N2, N3, N5, N7, N8, N12, N20, N25, N28, N38, N40, N41, N66, N77, and N78. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth v5.2, Wi-Fi 802.11, GPS and NFC.

Talking about biometrics, the phone comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which unlocks the phone instantly. It is quick to respond and quite reliable.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is unquestionably one of the most stylish smartphones you can own and flaunt. However, is it worth 90K? I would say yes. There is no other foldable smartphone in the market that comes close to this.

Since there is no competition in the market, Samsung has decided to take things easy with making just some minor improvements over the last Flip model. You get a bigger battery, faster charging speed, sleeker design, better chipset as well as a nice camera.

All in all, I would call it a better Flip3. If you want a clamshell foldable phone – this is the one to get, but it sure comes at a hefty price tag. Now if you’re planning to use this for many years to come, this cost may be justified.
