Realme Watch S
Review Summary

In the last few years, the smartwatch and fitness band market has grown rapidly in India. Realme, on the other hand, has just released its second smartwatch, the Realme Watch S, which promises a more streamlined experience than the previous Realme Watch.

Their second smartwatch, the Realme Watch S, is a significant improvement over the first one. The new design is more stylish, and the screen is brighter as well. With its larger battery, it can last two weeks with a single charge.

But despite how impressive it may appear on paper, just how well does the Watch S perform in actual use? Let’s find out in this Realme Watch S review.

Specs at a glance

Before we talk more about the smartwatch, let’s see what on-paper specs look like:

  • Display: 1.3 Inch IPS LCD
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth
  • Supported OS: Android & iOS
  • Battery: 390 mAh
  • Weight: 48 grams
Design and Build

While the classic Realme Watch was square, the Realme Watch S goes with a circular dial for its design. The round shape provides a more conventional watch design, which blends in seamlessly with your dressing. The slim bezels and aluminium case of the Watch S are two of the most noticeable changes from the previous Realme Watch.

Realme Watch S design

The Realme Watch S is so light that it was the very first element I noticed about it. You will find two buttons on the right side of the watch. One of them opens the app drawer while the other works as a shortcut for workout modes.

Aluminium makes up the frame and buttons, while plastic is used for the charging pins and sensors on the back. As an added bonus, the Watch S comes with a detachable 22mm silicone strap so you can mix and match it to your liking.

Realme Watch S back side

In terms of water resistance, the Watch S has an IP68 rating, which means that it can withstand accidental liquid spills, rain, and sweat but is not recommended for swimming or taking a bath.

Overall, the Realme Watch S has a sturdy design and an improved build quality compared to the first-generation Realme Watch.

Battery and Charging

The Realme Watch S packs a 390mAh battery which according to the company can offer 15 days of battery life. Sounds really good on the paper but does it live up to the claims? The claims made by Realme appeared to be true based on my time with the watch.

The Watch S simply lost around 8 per cent every day, and this was with the display set to auto-brightness and the continuous heart rate feature enabled.

The watch can be charged using the included magnetic charger. It takes around 2 hours to fully charge the watch from 0 to 100 per cent. There is also a Power Saving mode, which disables the majority of the features and only displays the current time.

Display

Realme Watch S features a 1.3-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 360×360 pixels. The Watch S is said to have a peak brightness of 600 nits. The display on the Watch S has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Another significant upgrade from the previous Realme Watch is the inclusion of auto-brightness in the Watch S. Although you have the option to manually adjust the brightness levels, the ‘auto display’ feature is very reliable. However, you do not get to see always-on-display.

As far as the display quality goes, the text in notifications and apps was crisp and clear. In direct sunlight, the display looked great, but if you’re coming from an AMOLED display, you’ll definitely notice the difference.

The Realme Watch S has a total of 108 unique watch faces to choose from, as well as the ability to create your own. The smartwatch can hold up to seven different watch faces. Overall, you’ll be pleased with the quality of the display on the Watch S.

Fitness and Health Features

For those who want to monitor their health and fitness, the Realme Watch S has a fair amount of tracking modes.

There are a total of 16 different sporting activities to choose from: walk, indoor run, outdoor run, indoor cycle, outdoor cycle, strength training, basketball, yoga, football, cricket, badminton, aerobic capacity, rowing machine, elliptical, stationary bike, and table tennis.

Realme Watch S fitness features

Running metrics such as speed, distance, and duration are shown on the Realme Watch S. There is no GPS built into the watch, so it relies on your phone’s GPS connection to map out your outdoor activities. Despite having an IP68 rating, this watch does not have a Swimming mode, which is its only shortcoming.

You have a heart rate sensor that gives you access to continuous monitoring, readings of your heart rate while at rest, and your heart rate in real-time while you exercise. You can set the heart rate monitor to take your measurements every 5 to 30 minutes.

Realme Watch S health features

The same sensor is used for blood oxygen measurements, but the ability to get accurate readings has been a little hit or miss in my testing.

The Watch S also keeps track of sleep, and there’s an app on the watch that lets you look at your most recent sleep statistics. It will measure the amount of time spent in REM, awake, deep sleep, and light sleep stages. It will also keep track of your heart rate while you’re sleeping. The Realme Link app provides access to all of that data.

I will be honest here, the heart rate and sleep tracking on the Realme Watch S aren’t very accurate. The companion app presents comprehensive metrics for both activity and health tracking. It also breaks down your workouts in detail.

Software and UI

The Realme Watch S is compatible with iOS and Android devices. To connect to your phone, you’ll need to download the Realme Link app. The process of setting up was quick and took only a few minutes.

The Link app has a lot to offer once you’ve set it up. With over 100 watch faces to choose from, you’ll have no problem finding one that suits your style. You can also use custom background to design your own watch face.

I could easily navigate through all of the features of the Realme Watch S, thanks to the watch’s smooth performance. You get the option to reject or mute an incoming call from the watch itself.

In terms of its features, the watch allows you to view notifications and dismiss them, but it does not allow you to respond to them. You will still need to enable notification alerts for each app separately within the Realme Link app. I could easily view the full text from WhatsApp but it only showed the subject line for emails.

Connecting the watch to your phone gives you access to weather information, the ability to control your phone’s camera, and music controls as well. Using the Link app, you can set reminders to get up and drink water at regular intervals.

Verdict

The Realme Watch S is undoubtedly an excellent upgrade to Realme’s first attempt, thanks to its more visually appealing design and better display. The Watch S has a bunch of features for a reasonably low price of Rs 4,999. The watch was not only reasonably priced, but it also looked and felt high-quality on my wrist.

Because it lacks a built-in GPS, you can’t call this a sports watch. On top of this, it misses out on a swimming mode despite the IP rating, which was also disappointing.

I think the Realme Watch S is a good choice if you want long battery life, a reliable user interface, good performance, and a clean app that holds everything together.
