Overwatch 2 is a hero-shooter sequel to the already popular Overwatch. The sequel was announced all the way back in 2019. However, very little development took place during the peak years of the Covid-19 pandemic, and understandably so. Recently, at the Xbox Showcase presented in June 2022, a trailer dropped for Overwatch 2. The trailer revealed a lot more information about this upcoming game. This article will look at multiple essential details about the game that you should know if you’re a fan of the series.

Let’s get started!

What is Overwatch 2?

Overwatch 2 gameplay

Overwatch is a multiplayer FPS (First Person Shooter) series developed by Blizzard Entertainment, the same minds behind the popular Diablo series. It features team-based gameplay with five-a-side teams, and each team has specific characters with special, unique powers. It features a story too, with a band of misfitting heroes banding together to save a world ravaged by war. The games in the series are entirely free-to-play and feature extensive microtransactions.

With Overwatch 2, Blizzard is looking to go bigger and better. New characters, maps, and weapons will be introduced. Additionally, you will likely see a story mode featuring PvE (Player vs Environment) elements. The story mode will expand on the lore that’s already been established in the first game.

Release date

The official release date for Overwatch 2 hasn’t been declared yet. However, the game will launch its early access on October 4, 2022. PvP (Player vs Player) and PvE releases will be split into two game modes. The game will be free to play. Unfortunately, you can only get access to the PvP mode in the early access. The PvE mode will be released later.

Trailer

Overwatch 2‘s first trailer was shown to gamers worldwide in the Xbox June 2022 Showcase. In case you didn’t get an opportunity to view the trailer, don’t worry. You can watch the Overwatch 2 trailer below:

Looking at the trailer closely confirms that the game can be accessed free of cost. Moreover, the developers will also introduce a new hero called Junker Queen. We’re sure that this will be the first of many new Overwatch characters.

Gameplay

As stated earlier, the game is an FPS featuring heroes that have their own special abilities. Due to this, each hero plays differently, and it’s up to the player to decide which hero they would want to use. The game features solid gunplay with a stylised aesthetic, which may not be for everyone. Apart from individual objectives, the game also features objectives based on the team you’re using. So, it actively rewards players who play well together. The gameplay is fast and intense, requiring you to change tactics mid-game, thanks to the level of chaos that often ensues in games of this nature.

Additionally, you can customise your heroes to suit your playing style. There are cosmetic changes to the heroes as well, from skins to their general and default looks. Lastly, you’re likely to see bigger and more dynamic map designs in the Overwatch sequel.

Betas

While the first round of Overwatch 2 betas is over, we will be seeing another beta gameplay in June 2022. Usually, when the betas roll around, the testing lasts for at least three weeks. At least, that was the case with the previous Overwatch 2 beta. In fact, the official Twitter handle for the game has tweeted that the second round of betas will start on June 28, 2022. You can have a look at the details below:

As for the beta signup process, we’ll update this space when more information is provided.

Platforms

Overwatch 2 characters

Overwatch 2 features crossplay. So, the game will have to be available on platforms that provide crossplay compatibility. At the moment, we’re not sure about the game’s support for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S. However, the game will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Moreover, the game will be compatible with the older Overwatch game. This means that if you own the first Overwatch and your friend owns the sequel, both of you will be able to engage in matches together.

Conclusion

So, here are all the relevant details you need on Overwatch 2. As you can see, Blizzard Entertainment is working hard to ensure that noticeable changes and upgrades are shown compared to the first Overwatch game. Moreover, since the game will be compatible with its predecessor, the gaming community for Overwatch 2 is bound to increase exponentially. What do you think of Overwatch 2, though? If you’ve played the first game, will you stick with it or go for the new game? Furthermore, if you’re a new player and haven’t played Overwatch yet, you should give it a try. After all, the game is entirely free to play!
