Marvel has consistently grown over the years. It’s no surprise that they’re dominating the box offices with their great movie releases. However, of late, they’ve also been expanding into the gaming world. Whether it’s the immensely popular Marvel’s Spider-Man or their entry into the mobile gaming scene, Marvel has started to expand its horizons in different directions. Now, they’ve announced Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a tactical RPG in the veins of XCOM. If you’re unsure about how a tactical RPG will look featuring Marvel characters, we’re here to help. This article will provide you with all the information regarding this upcoming game!
What is Marvel’s Midnight Suns?
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG being developed by Firaxis. In case you haven’t heard of the development studio, Firaxis is known for XCOM: Enemy Unknown and its sequel, XCOM 2. These games have been so successful that we’re now seeing the new age of tactical RPGs influenced by these two games. So, if you were wondering whether the game will be worth your time, the developers’ name alone should be enough to convince you of its potential.
The game will feature all the major Marvel characters, such as Wolverine, Dr Strange, and Spider-Man. However, the plotline is slightly different from the other Marvel games you’ve played so far. This game will feature a supernatural angle, with Hydra waking Lilith, the Mother of Demons. Lilith plans to take over the world by summoning a being called Chthon. So, it’s your job to recruit the right heroes for the job and stop Lilith from destroying the Marvel world as we know it.
Marvel’s Midnight Sun’s release date was set for March 2022, when it was revealed at the 2021 edition of Gamescom. However, due to numerous delays, the game is now set to release on October 7, 2022.
Firaxis has ensured that everyone with a gaming console or PC will be able to play the game. Marvel’s Midnight Suns will release for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
Since this is a Marvel game, some fan favourite characters have been added to the game. Currently, 13 characters have been confirmed for Marvel’s Midnight Suns. These are:
- Captain America
- Iron Man
- Dr Strange
- Captain Marvel
- Ghost Rider
- Nico Minoru
- Scarlet Witch
We’re expecting Marvel to add more characters to the game as they bring out downloadable content for the game if any.
The Hunter is Lilith’s child and is the only being to have ever defeated Lilith. She will be the primary protagonist of the game. You’ll be able to customise her appearance, although Marvel hasn’t specified if you can change her gender. You can also explore the home base, called The Abbey, with the Hunter and build bonds with the other Marvel heroes.
There are a couple of trailers out for the game at the moment. The first is the announcement trailer which was released to the public eye in 2021. Recently, Marvel released another trailer for the game, titled “Darkness Falls”. While the gameplay hasn’t been shown in the trailer, you can learn more about the game and the characters here:
While this game comes from the makers of the XCOM series, Firaxis has stated that the game will play differently as compared to XCOM games. The game will feature turn-based tactical gameplay, with the player choosing three heroes (in addition to the Hunter) to form a squad for a mission. However, it’s not about building up the strongest team as the game progresses. Instead, you’ll have to understand which heroes function well together and with which powers. Each of the abilities comes in the form of cards. These cards can be slotted for particular missions and situations. Moreover, the game has no permadeath, unlike the XCOM games. Since the cast is small, losing an entire character for your story playthrough could be hugely disadvantageous.
Unfortunately, nothing has been revealed yet regarding a multiplayer mode for the game. Truthfully, multiplayer wouldn’t make much sense in this type of game. However, we’ll just have to wait to find out if any sort of multiplayer or co-op will be added to the gameplay.
You can pre-book or pre-order the game from the game’s official site. Marvel’s Midnight Suns comes in four different editions, Standard, Enhanced, Digital+, and Legendary. You can choose which one takes your fancy and pre-order the game.
Now that you have a multitude of information on Marvel’s Midnight Suns, what do you think about the game? Is this something that you’d go for? We believe that the game is worth trying for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it’s a Marvel game with all the best Marvel characters. Secondly, the tactical, turn-based RPG style hasn’t been explored in a Marvel game yet. So, this could be the start of something great. We’ll just have to wait until the game’s release to find out how well Firaxis will be able to execute its plans.
