  • Buying a refrigerator is already a confusing task and with so many new technologies available it’s hard to decide which one is the best pick. And while looking out for new refrigerators we often come across the term “Inverter Technology”. We have already heard the same technology being used in Air Conditioners, but what is Inverter Technology in Refrigerators?

Here we try to explain what exactly is an Inverter Technology in refrigerators. And first, we have to understand how a refrigerator works and how this new technology helps us save on our electricity bills.

    How does a Refrigerator Work?

    How Refrigerator Works

Every refrigerator has two main components: a compressor which is the heart of the refrigerator and an evaporator on the backside. A compressor is responsible for circulating refrigerant which flows through the evaporator and absorbs heat from the inside of the refrigerator. This absorbed heat makes the refrigerant evaporate and form gas, cooling things kept in the refrigerator. Now the compressor compresses the gas, converting the refrigerant into liquid again. And this way the cycle continues.

    How Does Traditional Compressor work?

    Inverter Compressor

The conventional compressors have a fixed speed and can either switch On or Switch Off and nothing in between. Thus the compressor works either at full potential or not at all irrespective of the atmospheric conditions or load inside the refrigerator. The traditional compressors have a distinct noise when they turn on and go silent when the compressor is off.

The moment the temperature inside your refrigerator goes above the desired temperature; the compressor turns On and once the temperature is reached it turns Off. And the electricity consumption is highest with frequent On and Off operations. This is the core reason the traditional compressors are not energy efficient.

What is Inverter Technology In Refrigerators?

    Optimum Range of inverter compressor

A compressor with inverter technology has a variable speed compressor. This enables the compressor to adjust its efficiency in accordance with outside temperature and refrigerator load. An inverter compressor does not Turn On and Off but runs at varying speeds. An inverter compressor is equipped with brushless direct current or BLDC motors which enables the compressor to run at varying speeds.

For instance, on a hot sunny day when the outside temperature to high or the refrigerator is overloaded; the compressor will run at maximum speed to achieve the desired temperature. And during the night or on a cool day the compressor will run at minimum speed just to maintain the desired temperature. This eliminates the frequent turning on or off of a refrigerator and helps save a lot of energy consumption.

Inverter Compressors are about 30% more energy efficient compared to conventional compressors. Although the refrigerators with this technology are comparatively expensive but in the long run they will help save a lot on your electricity bill.

Benefits of an having Inverter Refrigerator?

    Inverter Technology in Refrigerators

Inverter technology in fridges is designed to save energy and improve the longevity of your fridge. Inverters compressors are more expensive than standard compressors, but they use less energy and run more efficiently. Inverters compressors also tend to last longer, so you may see a return on your investment over time.

Here are some of the specific benefits of an inverter fridge:

    1. Energy efficiency: Inverter compressors powered refrigerators use less energy than traditional compressors; so they can help you save on your electricity bill.
    2. Longer life: Inverter compressors tend to last longer than standard compressors, so you may not need to replace/repair your fridge as often.
    3. Quiet operation: Inverters compressors are silent compared to standard compressors, so you won’t have to deal with noisy fridge operation.
    4. Better temperature control: Inverter refrigerators can maintain a more consistent temperature than standard compressors, so your food will stay fresher for longer.

    Inverter Refrigerator vs Conventional Refrigerator

    Inverter Technology in Refrigerators

Inverter compressors are designed to vary their speed to match the cooling demand precisely, meaning they use less energy and run more quietly than conventional compressors.

In a conventional fridge, the compressor either runs at full power or not at all. This means that even when the fridge is only required to maintain a small temperature difference (for example, when there are only a few items in the fridge), the compressor will still use maximum power.

In contrast, an inverter compressor adjusts its speed to match the required temperature. So, if only a small amount of cooling is needed, the inverter compressor will run slowly and use less power. When more cooling is needed (for example, when you first open the door), the inverter compressor will speed up to provide the required power and then slow down.

Overall, this means that an inverter fridge is more efficient than a conventional fridge, as it only uses the amount of power necessary to maintain the desired temperature. Inverter fridges also tend to be quieter than conventional fridges, as they operate at lower speeds most of the time.

    Drawbacks of an Inverter Refrigerator

There are no real disadvantages of getting an inverter refrigerator. The one fact that can be considered a disadvantage is that these refrigerators are slightly expensive.

Refrigerators with inverter technology are comparatively expensive compared to the ones with traditional compressors. Although you ultimately end up saving about 30% on your electricity bill and this comes at a cost. The inverter refrigerators are usually about 15-30% more expensive than the traditional ones.

Is an inverter refrigerator right for me?

So, should you buy an inverter fridge? If you’re looking for a more energy-efficient option, then an inverter fridge is a good choice. Inverter fridges are also generally quieter than traditional fridges, so if noise is a concern, an inverter fridge might be the way to go. Keep in mind, however, that inverter fridges typically come with a higher price tag than traditional fridges.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to buy an inverter fridge or not comes down to personal preference. If you’re looking for a more energy-efficient option and aren’t concerned about the higher price tag, then an inverter fridge is a good choice for you.
