Let’s just cut to the chase. If you have been wanting to play the best Resident Evil games in 2023, you are late to the party. So, we are not going to suggest games that look way too outdated. This list is going to be all about talking about games that you can play today and not feel or look like you are playing on a microwave.
Ever since Resident Evil 7, Capcom has dedicated a lot, if not all of its resources towards making remakes. Successfully so, if we may add. Now, with Resident Evil 4 Remake out, an up-to-date list is needed.
If you can look past that one game, there are several games that will keep you hooked till the very end. However, do note that the Resident Evil series of games are not for the faint of hearts.
There are going to be additions to this list that incline towards the Survival Horror genre. Of course, since it is the best Resident Evil games we are talking about, they have been handpicked very carefully. So, be prepared to grind your teeth and make a whole lot of faces. Because these games are THAT good!

Best Resident Evil Games: How we made the list
As we said earlier, we are not going to suggest the first Resident Evil 3 or Resident Evil 2 games. Although these are gems in the horror genre, they won’t appeal to you if you are new to it all. So, these are what we considered when making this list:
- The games should hold up well in 2023, graphically and gameplay-wise
- How genuine the “horror” element in the games are
- If they are replayable in more challenging difficulties
With these factors out of the way, let us quickly dive in and take a look at the list!
7 best Resident Evil games to play in 2023
Let’s just say that 2023 has been a great year for survival horror game enthusiasts, so far. We got the Dead Space Remake very recently. Then, the Resident Evil 4 Remake landed and the gaming community has been busy ever since. Trying to pick the best Resident Evil games from such a glorious series is like finding a needle in a haystack. Well, we sure did do the impossible and here are our top choices for you to give a try!

1. Resident Evil 4 Remake
As we were talking about the Resident Evil 4 Remake earlier, it sure is a masterpiece. It is not just us who are saying this. Multiple critics and top gaming-centric media houses like GameSpot and Dexerto have similar such things to say.
The OG Resident Evil 4 is surely an amazing game. However, when you try replaying it in 2023, things may feel a tad bit outdated. As we said before, we are taking those titles into consideration that new-gen players can dive into without having to compromise on the graphics.
What makes RE 4 Remake a second-to-none instalment is that face that it retains the flavour of the original. On top of that, there are certain extended sections in the Remake that add to the depth of it all. The next-gen graphics and moments of pure horror make it one of the best survival horror games to have been released in the last decade!

2. Resident Evil 2 Remake
Of course, the Resident Evil 2 Remake had to be there. Annddddd, it’s not just because of Mr X. Well, maybe a bit. However, it is the way this game does justice to the original that got it so much respect in the community.
Without changing the feel of the original, they just infinitely enhanced the graphics and dread of the game. Mr X is a relentless chaser. He may make you hit the Esc button quite a few times. If a survival horror game doesn’t do that, what good is it anyway?
Although the game is pretty short, it is a tough one to get through. Especially, if you are not a seasoned survival horror player. The puzzles, constant feeling of being chased and dark hallways make it a stressful game to play. If you are up for it, by all means! Needless to say, this is indeed one of the best Resident Evil games of all time!
3. Resident Evil Remake
The Resident Evil HD Remaster came out almost 6 years after the original. However, the remaster was way ahead of its time as it is absolutely gorgeous. You can still revisit the game and it won’t feel nearly as dated as the other older titles in the franchise.
The gameplay is phenomenal, the graphics are immensely enhanced and on top of that, it retains the original camera angles. Nothing is over the top, yet it has everything to keep you glued for hours on end. Most importantly, this remake was spooky, something which even a lot of newer titles failed to achieve.

4. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard
Resident Evil 7 Biohazard was groundbreaking, to say the least. This game became the turning point for Capcom when they were at their all-time low. Post Resident Evil 6, Capcom decided to go back to the franchise roots and take it up a notch.
When Resident Evil 7 first came out back in 2017, people were taken aback. Something like this was not seen before in the Resident Evil franchise. Biohazard has, in our opinion, the best opening of any RE game out there.
Prior to this, Resident Evil was often associated with zombies. However, this instalment brought the scariest Resident Evil imaginable at the time. It still holds up as one of the scariest survival horror games of all time. Has to be one of the best Resident Evil games right?!
Those first 25-30 minutes will absolutely scare you unconscious if you are not used to the genre. If you don’t believe us, see a compilation of Resident Evil 7 moments. The DLCs were underwhelming, but the single-player campaign is one that sticks with you for a long time after you have played it.
5. Resident Evil 8 Village
Once you are done with Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 8 will feel like a walk in the park. There are a couple of pretty scary moments. However, nothing compared to the claustrophobic feel of Biohazard. With Village, Capcom took more of the Action/Adventure route.
This is primarily because Capcom did not want to make Village as scary as Biohazard. The community felt that Resident Evil 7 turned out to be way too scary. However, that does not mean that Resident Evil 8 is not fun.
In fact, we had more fun with Resident Evil 8 when it came to gameplay. You got to blow the heads of a wide variety of enemies. That is something that Resident Evil 7 lacked big time. The massive black gooey monsters became way too repetitive and boring by the end of it.
With Resident Evil 8, not only do you get to see stunning graphics, you get to face vampires, werewolves, and even spooky dolls! In addition, the Shadow of Rose DLC is probably one of the best Resident Evil DLCs we have had.
Not to mention that the game has some of the best boss fights in the Resident Evil saga, making it easily one of the best Resident Evil games to play.

6. Resident Evil 3 Remake
The Resident Evil 3 Remake felt incomplete and did not really do justice to the original. Then again, we decided to handpick games that would not feel outdated in 2023. It’s a gorgeous remake and will look great on the big screen. Moreover, if you are someone who hasn’t played the original RE 3, you will love the game.
It is when you start comparing the remakes to their original counterparts that things start getting real judgy. If you are not an RE head, this game should appeal to you just fine. Just don’t keep a whole lot of expectations going in.
Nemesis is supposed to be significantly scarier than Mr X. However, he is an absolute joke in the game. So, you probably have to turn up the difficulty to truly enjoy him being a threat. He is faster and stronger than Mr X. Yet, the game fails to make you feel the Nemesis dread like the original did.
Still, a great opening sequence, mind-boggling graphics and smooth controls make it one of the best Resident Evil games to play in 2023.
7. Resident Evil Revelations 2
Resident Evil Revelations 2 was scary. However, what makes it one of the best Resident Evil games is not just that. If you want a super fun Co-Op experience, it is for you. Additionally, its Raid Mode is something that is still loved by fans of the franchise. The Raid Mode can offer hours of endless fun.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 was far from being a commercial blockbuster. However, if you give it a revisit, you won’t be disappointed. If you haven’t played it before, you will love it. It is not exactly the scariest RE game out there.
However, the atmosphere is what you would want to play Revelations 2 for. The atmosphere and Raid Mode are two things that make it one of the best Resident Evil games to play.
The Future of Resident Evil
Going by how successful the series has been so far, it is highly unlikely that Capcom will stop anytime soon. We can expect to see a remake of Resident Evil 5 next. Resident Evil 5 was a dud of a game when compared to the likes of the other games. However, going by how Capcom has buckled up to deliver the best possible remakes of our favourite titles in recent years, RE5 may get a pretty good remake.
Additionally, Resident Evil 9 is also said to be in the works. According to leaks and reports, it has been in development since 2018. Further, leaks also suggest that the ninth instalment in the Resident Evil franchise will be named Apocalypse.

For those wondering about the setting of this upcoming game, leaks suggest a West American ghost town. However, since Capcom has not yet confirmed that RE 9 is happening, it is tough to say what they have got up their sleeves at this point. One can only hope for the best. Being Resident Evil heads, we sure are rooting for Capcom. What about you? Let us know in the comments section!
