The Meta-owned company has started the rollout of its Channels feature globally, including India. This feature will allow you to follow your favourite organization, sports team, artists and thought leaders within WhatsApp.

It is available in a new Updates tab, where you can also check the WhatsApp Status of your contacts. This one-way communication medium works similarly to Telegram channels, where you can only read and not send messages.

WhatsApp aims to “build the most private broadcast service available” by protecting the identity of admins and followers in a channel. Moreover, the channels you follow will be private and only visible to you.

    How To Use WhatsApp Channels?

You can search for available channels in WhatsApp using the Search Directory feature by filtering them according to your preferences. Different categories of filters are available: New, Most Active, and Popular based on their number of followers.

Like WhatsApp chats, you can react to a message sent in a channel, and your reaction will not be visible to other followers. Similarly, you can also forward a message received in a channel to other people, and when they click on it, it will link them back to the respective channel. Moreover, admins of these channels can also edit messages for up to 30 days, after which they will be deleted.

WhatsApp promises to add more features to Channels in the feature while also making it possible for anyone to create their own channel. Do note that messages broadcasted in a channel are not end-to-end encrypted. This enables them to reach a wider audience, unlike chats with limited members.
