Contrary to popular belief, some of the best Xbox One games are also the best console games of all time. Of course, the Microsoft console has been overshadowed by Sony’s PlayStation in recent years. However, it still holds up today, thanks to a few gaming titles that continue to push the interest in Microsoft’s offering. In fact, Xbox One provides a whole host of games, from multiplayer shooters to family games, that can be enjoyed by everyone.
In this list, you’ll find entries of some of the best Xbox One games of all time. Whether it’s the frantic Halo series or the immersive world crafted by Ubisoft in Assassin’s Creed, there’s something for everyone here. Without further ado, let’s dive into the list!

Halo: The Master Chief Collection
It wouldn’t be a list of the best Xbox One games if we didn’t include a Halo title. With this fantastic collection, you get six Halo games for the price of one. This includes all the classics, such as Halo 2 and Halo 4, as well as their updated visuals, maps, and features. Halo’s single-player and multiplayer modes are still some of the best in the shooter franchise. This is why we believe that you should go for this collection with your eyes closed. If you don’t have a craving for Halo 5, then you’re in luck. The Master Chief Collection doesn’t bring you this game. However, the rest of the games are plenty to keep you entertained.
NieR: Automata – Become As Gods Edition
NieR: Automata was released quite late for the Xbox One. Regardless, this game is so unique that it immediately makes our list of the best Xbox One games of all time. Moreover, with this edition, you can enjoy the unique gameplay that the game offers at 4K resolution. This game is unique in every aspect possible. From a storyline point of view, the game is essentially about androids slowly gaining sentience and questioning everything about the world. From a gameplay perspective, you get an action RPG that requires you to complete the game multiple times to unlock the true ending. Essentially, you’ll find tons of replayability here.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
If you’re looking for an Xbox One game that provides you with a compelling story intermixed with a dark atmosphere, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice should be on your playlist. It’s a haunting tale of the loss, life, and horrors of psychosis. Senua’s characterisation is brilliant, and the motion capture performance is one of the best you’ll ever see. Developer Ninja Theory has clearly put in plenty of work to make the mental episodes as accurate as possible. Don’t expect impressive combat, though – this game focuses more on the storytelling elements and the ambience it creates.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
There was a time when Assassin’s Creed meant immersive stealth and action-adventure games. Now, the direction for the series has completely changed – most would say for the better. The new Assassin’s Creed games feature vast open worlds to traverse, with multiple quests and RPG elements to discover. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the latest standalone entry in the series and follows the same formula. The Norse setting of the story works well, with a good (if slightly inaccurate) representation of Norse mythology. You can jump directly into this game without playing the previous entries in the series. The combat is brutal and varied, the storyline is decent, and the worldbuilding is exceptional.

If you haven’t played Control yet, you should. This game was released in 2019 and was nominated for multiple awards. Whichever aspect you consider, whether it’s the story, gameplay, or visuals, developers Remedy have created one of the best Xbox One games of all time. The game’s setting is a minimalist, 1950s inspired world where you have almost no idea what’s going on. Each time you think you’ve received an answer, you’re proven wrong by another twist to the tale. The gameplay is solid, with both gunplay and telekinesis (yes, telekinesis) powers feeling great but not overwhelming. Control is one of the most intriguing games you’ll play.
Cuphead debuted for PC gamers in 2017, long before it made its way to the Xbox One. However, it doesn’t matter much as it didn’t take long to become one of the best Xbox One games. This is a run-and-gun game inspired by the old classics like Contra. If you’ve played those games, you’re aware that they focus plenty on boss battles. The situation is similar with Cuphead. The boss battles are tremendously challenging, albeit a lot of fun. You have to learn patterns and your reaction times need to be at their best if you want to beat this game. The aesthetics may not be for you (at first), but it will remind you of 1930s cartoons. Cuphead may not be for everyone, especially for casual gamers. But we’d recommend you give it a shot.

Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 finds plenty of mentions online, and for a good reason. When it was released in 2018, it changed everything we knew about gaming. Most of us didn’t have the slightest clue that a video game could be so magnificent, both in terms of content and technology. Fast forward to 2022, and many games still lack the polish that Rockstar brought with this game. If you haven’t played the game yet, and you’ve got an Xbox One lying around somewhere, play the game immediately. Its vast open world, captivating storyline, smooth gameplay, and memorable characters will keep you hooked for hours on end. If you complete the main campaign, you could also invite friends on Red Dead Online and complete new activities. Overall, this isn’t just one of the best Xbox One games of all time; it’s one of the best games ever. Period.
The Xbox One didn’t have the impact that Microsoft had hoped for upon its release. Nevertheless, they’ve still produced a good gaming console loved by many gamers worldwide. Considering this list of the best Xbox One games, it’s clear that they’ve done something right with this gaming console. Hopefully, a few other exciting games will be released in the future for Xbox One owners.
