Method 1: Set Screen Time Limits from Settings

how to set screen time in smartphone.

The best way to manage your screen time like a pro is to set up limits for the most used applications. Google has recently introduced a new feature named “Digital Wellbeing.” This is compatible with smartphones running on Android Pie and upwards. Using this feature, you can easily restrict your certain app usage.

Popular brands like Samsung, Realme, and Redmi are running Android Pie and other above versions and most of the new smartphone users won’t face a problem in getting this feature. And even if the feature i not available you can download it from the Google Play Store.

Download Digital Wellbeing from Google Play Store

To access this feature you need to:

  1. Go to the Settings of your phone first, look for “Digital Wellbeing” section and select it.
  2. Now, choose a timer for each app as per your wish (from 5 minutes to 24hrs.) When you exceed your previously set time limit, your access to the app automatically gets restricted. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to use it again. Yes, you can change your set limit whenever you want.

Note: Even iPhone users can also avail of this screen timer limit as iOS devices also allow setting a per-app time limit.

Method 2: Stop Taking Your Phone to Bed

using smartphone while sleeping can cause mental health

Here comes the biggest ‘No-No’ of the tech world- you can’t take technology to your bed. Most of us are habituated to using phones, laptops, tablets before bedtime. Doing so impacts our health tremendously. The artificial light especially blue light emitted from our phone or laptop’s screen is extremely harmful to our sleep quality. Plus, deficiency of sleep leads to major health issues.

So, if you have a habit of scrolling through your Instagram feed before sleeping, it’s time to replace your phone with a book and grow a habit of reading before sleeping.

Method 3: Hangout with Your Friends More Often

involving in groups and not using phone can help a lot

Getting along with friends is one of the best methods which you can adapt to. Just invite your friends to your place or visit their place and have a good conversation. We all know that when we are surrounded by people, we rarely use the mobile phone. You can use this time to play board games or discuss the things you have in your mind. This time you are going to spend with your friends will not only make your bond stronger with them but also help you in getting rid of the addiction you have with your phone.

Method 4: Turn on Grayscale

grayscale mode in smartphone.

We’ve already talked about “Digital Wellbeing,” it’s time to tell you about another usage of this feature. And that is Wind Down or Greyscale. Some studies show that you spend most of the time on the phone because the neuron-stimulating colors play a major role in drawing you in.

Greyscale removes such addictive elements from the color and filters it in a way that you ultimately end up using your phone less. Plus, Greyscale reduces and filters the blue light to a certain percentage.

  1. Settings > Digital Wellbeing
  2. Parental controls > Wind Down > Set a schedule > Toggle ON to turn on the color filter.

For iPhone Users:

Follow the below-mentioned navigation to access the settings.

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters > Toggle on.

Method 5: Consider Some Off-Screen Hobbies

involving in off screen hobbiescan help reduce smartphone addiction.

Why not use off-screen hobbies when you wish to manage the screen time on a mobile phone like a pro. All you need to do is just consider any of your hobbies. For example, if you are fond of playing the guitar, then learn something new every day.

When you start using it regularly, it will not only polish your skills, but you will be able to manage the screen time on the mobile phone as well. There will be no need for you to keep your phone with you every time. You can simply take your guitar and play it. Not only guitar, if you are fond of any other hobby like singing, dancing, or anything, then also you can engage in it and cut out the screen time.

keep your phone out of visibility.

Keeping it out of sight is the method with which a person can adapt without any trouble. If you feel like that in the coming hours, there are no important calls that are expected, then keep it out of sight. Keep it in your cupboard or on your desk or on charging. This totally depends on where you wish to keep it.

If you are at the place where your mobile is right in front, you cannot stop yourself from using it. Hence, to cut it out, all you need to do is just keep it out of your sight. The more you keep it out of your sight, the longer you will be able to manage the screen time.

Method 7: Turn OFF Unnecessary Notifications

turning off unnecessary notifications can help reduce your engagement in smart phones.

Last but not least, turn off all the notifications. Both Android and iOS devices feature a Do-Not-Disturb mode that can disable all the notifications on your smartphone. This DND mode will not provoke you to use your phone anymore. All you need to do is just turn on the DND, and all the notifications will be silent after it. You can still read all the notifications next time when you use your device. Make sure you are keeping yourself occupied with some other stuff so that there will be no urge to use your phone.
