  • Instagram is stepping deeper into real-time sharing with its latest update, introducing new Instants app features that focus on quick, unfiltered photo sharing. The Meta-owned platform is rolling out “Instants,” a feature that lets userssend photos that disappear after being viewed once and expire within 24 hours.

This move puts Instagram in direct competition with Snapchat, which has long been known for disappearing messages and photos. With Instants, Instagram aims to push more authentic and spontaneous content, moving away from overly edited posts.

The feature is currently being tested in select regions, including Spain and Italy, and is available on both Android and iOS devices. Users can access it within the main Instagram app or through a separate Instants app.

Key Instants App Features And How It Works

The new Instants app features focus on simplicity and real time sharing. Unlike traditional Instagram posts or Stories, this feature limits editing and encourages users to capture moments instantly.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Photos can be viewed only once by the recipient
    • Shared images disappear after 24 hours
    • Users must capture photos using the in app camera
    • No option to upload images from the gallery
    • Limited editing, only basic text can be added
    • One tap capture for faster sharing

These restrictions are designed to make the experience more natural and less curated. Instagram wants users to share moments as they happen, without spending time editing or selecting the perfect image.

Competition With Snapchat And Other Updates

The Instants app features clearly show Instagram’s strategy of adopting ideas that already work on other platforms. Snapchat popularised disappearing content, while apps like Locket and BeReal focused on raw and authentic sharing.

However, Instagram adds its own twist by introducing a strict 24 hour availability window, which is different from Snapchat’s more flexible viewing limits.

Alongside Instants, Instagram is also improving its core platform. The company recently added a comment editing feature, allowing users to edit their comments within 15 minutes of posting. Edited comments are marked for transparency.

Instagram has also introduced Teen Accounts in India, offering better safety controls and content filters for younger users.

With the rollout of Instants app features, Instagram is clearly focusing on real time interaction and private sharing. As testing expands, more users are expected to get access in the coming months.
