Big Basket Confirms Data Breach Of 2 Crore Users

Online supermarket Big Basket lands itself in a cyber issue with its data breach recently. This platform gained its major popularity during the lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company has accidentally put the data of over 2 crore users at stake. Moreover, it is now on sale on the dark web for around Rs.30 lakh, claims cyber intelligence firm Cyble.

What Big Basket information has been leaked?

Cyble, the cyber-security firm that reported the Big Basket breach informed that it was first detected on October 31. The size of the SQL file is approximately 15 GB, containing close to 20 Million user data. More specifically, this includes full names, email IDs, password hashes (potentially hashed OTPs), pin, contact numbers (mobile + phone), full addresses, date of birth, location, and IP addresses of login among many others,” Cyble noted in the blog post.

 The Big Basket data breach reportedly took place on October 30th. Cyble informed Big Basket about the breach and the e-commerce platform filed the complaint with Cyber Crime Cell in Bengaluru.

A few days ago, we learnt about a potential data breach at Big Basket. We are evaluating the extent of the breach and authenticity of the claim in consultation with cybersecurity experts. They are finding immediate ways to contain it. We have also lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell in Bengaluru and intend to pursue this vigorously to bring the culprits to book.”

However, the company claims that it prioritizes the privacy and confidentiality of its customers. Big Basket does not store any financial data including credit card numbers and is confident that users’ financial data is secure.

“The only customer data we maintain are email IDs, phone numbers, order details, and addresses so these are the details that could potentially have been accessed. We have a robust information security framework that employs best-in-class resources and technologies to manage our information,” the company added.

On the other hand, India saw a total of six cases of breaches in the last one month alone. It includes Haldiram Snacks Pvt. Ltd, Wedmegood, Indian Prime Minister’s personal website narendramodi.in, IRCTC, Bharat Matrimony, and Dr. Reddy.
