Top 20 Selling Smartphones in 2020

1. Redmi 9A

Redmi 9A

Where there is a list of top-selling phones a Redmi is always in sight. Amongst the multiple Redmi products that were sold the most in 2020 lies the Redmi 9A. The device features a 6.53-inch LCD panel which is pretty big and vibrant, and, the device also features the Mediatek G25 processor and a 13-megapixel sensor.

There are some shortcomings with the Redmi 9A though, the primary one being the inclusion of the micro-USB port, even though it’s predecessor featured a type-C port. The selfie sensor too is not very good, but, for the price, we should not complain too much.

2. OnePlus Nord

OnePlus Nord

One of the most hyped products of 2020, the OnePlus Nord sold like hotcakes, up to the point that people had to wait to get a hold on the product and, for a couple of months, the device was mostly out of stock, even though the brand kept refreshing the stock a few days apart.

The device features a vibrant, smooth 90Hz refresh rate touting a 6.44-inch AMOLED panel, complete with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The device also features a Snapdragon 765G chipset, one of the best chips available for the price. There are some cons though, the most worrisome of which is the camera, which is plain average and, in terms of the cameras, the Poco X2 is a better bet for a cheaper price.

3. Redmi 9

Biggest Selling Phones 2020: Redmi 9

Another good seller from Redmi, the Redmi 9 is not a lot different when compared to the Redmi 9A. It features the same 6.53-inch LCD panel with an HD+ resolution. The processor has been bumped up to an Helio G35 and, the cameras too have been updated to a dual-camera setup with a secondary depth sensor.

Some cons include the retention of a Micro-USB port, which is a downgrade when compared to the predecessor and, the pricing too is not as aggressive as we would have liked. That being said, the device did sell well, so that’s that.

4. Redmi 9 Prime

Biggest Selling Phones 2020: Redmi 9 Prime

Redmi’s 9 series sold pretty well, as evident by the number of Redmi products listed on top and, the king of the 9 series, the Redmi 9 Prime makes an appearance as well. The device features a 6.53-inch FHD+ display, a good build, adequate cameras and 18W Type-C based charging. The device is one of the best options for anyone looking for a device under 10k, with the only con being the absence of a higher-megapixel primary camera in the similar price range, something offered by it’s competition, the realme Narzo 20.

5. Samsung Galaxy M21

Samsung Galaxy M21s Launched

Samsung launched the M series in 2019 and, the series has been a huge success in India. Launched to cater to the users of the J series crowd, the M series devices offer great value in exchange for minor cons, mostly on the silicon side.

The Samsung M21 is no exception, featuring a vivid, bright 6.4 inches FHD Super AMOLED panel, a good set of cameras, a massive 6000 mAh battery, the M21 is a great value proposition, that is, if you are okay with Exynos processors and can bear the performance drops in comparison to other competitors in the same segment.

6. Samsung Galaxy M31 Prime

Samsung Galaxy M31s

A special edition smartphone meant for the users who are more interested in OTT platforms, especially Amazon Prime, the Galaxy M31 Prime comes bundled with free membership of Amazon Prime for a certain period of time. Other features include a similar Super AMOLED panel as the M21, a 64-megapixel sensor quad-camera stack, a polycarbonate build, a 6000 mAh battery, and the Exynos 9611 chipset, which has begun to age a bit in 2020.

7. Redmi Note 9

Redmi Note 9 Front Back

The device that was out of the limelight for some time, the Redmi Note 9 still sold well and was amongst the top selling devices. It features a 6.5-inch LCD panel with a resolution of FHD+ and, there is a side mounted punch-hole to boot.

Other features include 20W fast charging via a Type-C port, the Helio G85 chipset for performance, and a 48-megapixel quad-camera stack. The only major con was the absence of a 90Hz display, a feature offered by it’s competitor the Realme 6i.

8. Redmi Note 9 Pro

Biggest Selling Phones 2020: Note 9 Pro

Launched as the successor to the Note 8 with some newer additions, the Note 9 Pro is a good device, but, it sadly got overshadowed by the Realme 6. The device features a massive 6.67-inch FHD+ LCD panel, a Snapdragon 720G chipset and a 48-megapixel camera. The only con was 18W charging, whereas the realme 6 at the same price offered 30W charging and the lack of 90Hz refresh rate, another feature present on the latter.

9. Samsung Galaxy M51

Biggest Selling Phones 2020: Samsung Galaxy M51

The Samsung Galaxy M51 was an interesting product from Samsung because it addressed all the complaints that the users had with older Samsung devices. There is a massive 7000 mAh battery, coupled with the Snapdragon 730G chipset. There is also a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display, which means it is also an ideal fit for media consumption. The only issue is the cheap build which gets scratched quite easily, but, if used with a case, the device should hold up well.

10. iPhone 7

iPhone 7

Launched a few years ago, the iPhone 7 is not a very good product. It features a pretty old display with sizable bezels, adequate performance, and cameras, but, the cameras too lack versatility. Software while up to date for now will be a concern for new users. So, why is it a bestseller? It allows the users to shift to iOS for less and experience it first hand, something that many people wish to do.

11. Redmi Note 8

Redmi Note 8

Launched in late 2019, you might be wondering, what is this old device doing in the top charts? Well, for a long time, until the lockdown cleared, there were some very poor options in the 10k segment. So, for those users, the Note 8 offered an excellent set of cameras, stable UI, good performance and a crisp, bright LCD display. It certainly was and, till this day is a very capable device for the price it retails at.

12. Realme 6

Realme 6

Launched alongside the Realme 6 Pro, the Realme 6 is one of the best selling devices on flipkart and, the reason for this is quite simple. The device is a powerhouse. It features a 6.5-inch FHD+ display with a 90Hz display, which, at the time of it’s launch was the cheapest high refresh rate display by some margin.

The device also featured the gaming focus Mediatek G90T and came equipped with a 64-megapixel quad-camera stack. The only con was the fact that the device while feeling premium for the price could not match the feel of the Note series from Redmi with their glass builds.

13. Redmi Note 8 Pro

Redmi Note 8Pro

Launched alongside the Note 8, the Note 8 Pro garnered a lot of attention for the inclusion of the Helio G90T, since, till then, no major brand had used a Mediatek chip on one of their most selling line of smartphones, but, as we all know, this turned out into a success story.

The Note 8 Pro comes with a  beautiful design, a good 64-megapixel based quad-camera stack, and a large 4500 mAh  battery. For the time and, even in today’s day and age, the Note 8 Pro is selling well.

14. iPhone 11

iPhone 11

One of the best value for money Apple products that you can find, the iPhone 11 features a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display, coupled with a dual-camera setup comprising a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a wide-angle sensor, both of which are capable of producing amazing shots.

The device also comes with the Apple A13 Bionic chip, which is still faster than any Android chip available. The only con with this device was the inclusion of a Lightning port and 5W charging, coupled with a low-resolution LCD panel for the price. Currently retailing for around 50-55k, it is without any doubt, one of, if not the best value for money propositions out there.

15. Redmi 8A

Biggest Selling Phones 2020: Redmi 8A

Launched in 2019, the Redmi 8A is a pretty barebone device, with an LCD display, the Snapdragon 425 chipset, and cameras clearly meant for the price. The 8A might not be the best option out there, but, the device, for a price of 6k INR nailed a lot of the basics and, because of this reason, it sold pretty well and, even in 2020 you can easily spot someone or the other using a Redmi 8A.

16. iPhone XR

iPhone XR

Another one of the cheaper iPhone options, the iPhone XR is an iPhone 11 minus the secondary camera. The display is pretty same and, while the A12 Bionic is a step down from the A13 Bionic, the difference is not as major as you would think.

Camera performance is decent and, the device is somewhat capable of trading blows with flagships. Basically, for someone on a very tight budget, wishing for the base iPhone experience and the new design, the XR is the best option out there.

17. Vivo V19

Vivo V19

Launched in early 2020, the Vivo V19 did not garner a lot of attention from the critics, with most of them feeling that the device was well, to put it bluntly, overpriced. The device featured a good display and a good set of cameras, but they were not the best in their competition and, the pricing of above 25k for an inferior chip and poor software did not sit well with the critics. The consumers, however, seemed to favor the design and the cameras, resulting in good sales figures.

18. Galaxy A51

Samsung Galaxy A51

The Samsung Galaxy A51 was popular months after it’s launch, considering its success in various markets around the world. The device was one of the best offerings from Samsung to date, with a good 6.5 inches Super AMOLED display, adequate cameras, a reasonable price, and overall balanced specifications. The addition of an in-display fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C, and Dolby Atmos audio were great addons.

19. iPhone 11 Pro Max

iPhone 11 Pro Max

Launched in 2019, the iPhone 11 Pro Max was the king of Apple’s lineup leading up to the launch of the iPhone 12 series. The device while exorbitantly priced, offered a massive 6.7-inch Super XDR OLED panel, the top notch A13 Bionic chipset, amazing battery life and, the best video capabilities offered by a smartphone in it’s time. This was the reason for the high sales number of the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

20. Poco X2

Biggest Selling Phones 2020: Poco X2

The Poco X2 sold very well in India and, why would it not? Launched after a 1.5-year hiatus by the company, the Poco X2 is the second product launched by Poco and, at the time of its launch, it offered some features unheard for the price range, like a 120Hz display and 33W charging.

The only con was the resemblance to the Redmi K30, which is basically the same device, with the Poco X2 being a rebrand. That however did not affect the sales figures and, as most might have been able to predict, the device was a success.
