Samsung Galaxy J6 Plus

Samsung Galaxy J6+ is the modified version of Samsung J6, and it comes with some important upgrades. Priced at ₹ 11,990, this handset could indeed turn out to be an impressive mid-range model that could provide a fair fight to other flagship competitors.

Samsung Galaxy J6+ improves on the poor camera set up of Samsung Galaxy J6 and provides an incredible mid-range camera which works well both in daylight as well as low-light settings. However, the performance tends to get slow, and the battery is quite underwhelming. If you are looking to click great pictures, then this is the phone to go for, though you might be disappointed with the performance.

The Samsung Galaxy J6+ comes with a metal frame on all its sides. It also has a glass rear which is quite comfortable to hold and comes with different colours of grey, black and red. The rear has a dual camera set with LED flash. The fingerprint scanner has been integrated with the power button which is located on the right-hand side. It works quite fast and is an advancement from the J4 which did not come with the scanner. The downside of the phone is that it has thick top and bottom bezels which limits the screen space to a large degree. It weighs around 178 g, which is a bit on the heavier side, but it sits well in hand and feels durable enough.

The Samsung Galaxy J6+ has a 6-inch TFT display with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 and comes with a resolution of 1450×720 pixels. The maximum brightness is around 508 nits which is quite good for the phone of this price range. Outside, it cannot handle harsh sunlight, so it is better to use the phone in the shade. The brightness distribution is around 95% which is quite excellent. Comparatively, Samsung Galaxy A7 beats J6+ with a 570 nits brightness, but Motorola One falls shot at 467 nits. The viewing angles of this phone are superb with no distortion if colour or content even at hard angles. The colours do not appear washed out, and the contrast is quite good, though you won’t get the AMOLED screen quality.

Samsung Galaxy J6+ comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 and an Adreno 308 GPU paired with a 3 GB RAM. It makes the overall performance go mostly smooth. Benchmark tests put the multi-core performance at 1801 points which falls short of Motorola One’s 4374 points and Galaxy A7’s 4429 points. It is powerful enough to run the essential apps and basic games smoothly, though there could be minor frame drops while gaming. However, GPU power is quite limited and tends to struggle with modern demanding games. Even at moderate settings, the gameplay is quite choppy. Casual games run fine but the loading time tends to be quite long. All in all, for basic performance, the phone does well.

The Galaxy J6+ comes with a 13MP primary camera and a 5 MP main camera with an f/1.9 aperture as well as an f/2.2 aperture. The primary camera can capture a detailed panorama, though if you zoom in, you might spot some blurring. There are also differences in the brightness between shadow areas and light areas, both of which lack details. However, if you do not go for zooming in, the photos appear quite colourful and detailed in ideal light.

In low light, the images become noticeably blurry, and the colours get distorted. However, the objects could be spotted too though the edges get blurry around the darker sides.

The front facing 8MP camera with an aperture of  f/1.9 works well to click social-media worthy pictures, though the low light problem still exists.

In ideal light, the details appear fine but when the lights go dim, the subject becomes blurry, and there is a lot of visual noise.

While the video quality is quite good, it is amplified by the image stabilisation which irons out any wiggle or minor shake.

Samsung Galaxy J6+ comes with a powerful 3300 mAh battery. It has the power to run about 11 hours in real time before it needs to be recharged. Hence, despite having a powerful battery, the performance of the battery is underwhelming. Motorola One provides a better performance, though it just has about 3,000 mAh. With light use, you can run the phone until night before you need an extra top-up. Plus, the phone does not come with fast charging, so it takes 3 hours to go from 0% to 100%. This is quite a lot, even for a budget phone.

Samsung Galaxy J6+ is quite a robust and well-designed smartphone with a decent touchscreen, a decent set of cameras and premium look. However, there are certain flaws. The performance is quite underwhelming for a budget phone and the battery, despite being powerful on paper, does not deliver the same. If you are looking for a phone for intensive gaming or tasks, then this is not the phone for you. However, Galaxy J6+ could be a great phone for a budget user who is satisfied with running basic apps and wishes to have a decent camera in their hands.
