Oppo A5s Design
The design of the Oppo A5s bears similarity to the brands latest launches like Oppo A7, Oppo K1, and Oppo F9 Pro. The design looks pretty classy and elegant for a phone in the 10k segment. The glossy metal body and the 2.5D curved glass screen give the phone a premium look-and-feel. However, the glossy back is a grease and fingerprint magnet.
On the rear, there is a horizontally aligned dual-camera module with an LED flash. The oval-shaped Fingerprint Sensor lies on the top-middle portion of the panel. The Fingerprint Sensor is accentuated with a golden rim that looks great. While the power button rests on the right side of the frame, the volume rockers lie on the left. At the bottom, you get a micro USB port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a speaker grille. The tiny notch on the screen houses the selfie camera.
The build quality of the Oppo A5s feels both light and sturdy at the same time. The rounded corners make it easier to grip the phone. We think that the phone could have looked better if Oppo went for the two-toned gradient finish as is seen in Xiaomi models.
Oppo A5s Display
As mentioned before, the Oppo A5s has a 6.2-inch HD+ display with a screen resolution of with 720×1520 pixels and a 19:9 aspect ratio. The pixel density is 403 pixels per inch.
The display offers vivid and vibrant colours, with decent brightness levels. Even the outdoor visibility is commendable. It has a waterdrop notch on the top that is not intrusive at all. Apart from a considerable chin at the bottom, the phone is bezelless. The screen has a Gorilla Glass 3 protection which is fantastic.
Coming to the viewing experience, the phone won’t disappoint you. The big and immersive display offers good viewing angles. In fact, the display quality appears to be a tad better than its competitor, the Realme 3. You also get the Night Shield mode that reduces the blue light emitted from the screen to minimize eye strain at night.
Oppo A5s Performance
The Oppo A5s uses an octa-core (4×2.3 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A53) MediaTek Helio P35 SoC, the same processor that powers the Vivo Y17 and the Honor A8 Pro.
While the processor is not the fastest one you’ll find in phones in the 10k segment, it can handle everyday tasks very well. You can multitask with ease. However, you might notice a slight lag when launching specific apps like Facebook and Instagram and also while navigating between apps. As for gaming, the Oppo A5s can run small and lightweight games pretty smoothly.
On the contrary, when it comes to heavyweight games like PUBG, the phone is not optimized for it. If you love binge-watching, the Oppo A5s is a good phone that delivers a pleasant experience. Both the Face Unlock and the Fingerprint Sensor are responsive and work well.
The phone features Oppo’s custom OS – ColorOS 5.2 based on Android Oreo. Dated as it may be, the UI seems fluid for the most part, and it comes with a lot of useful shortcuts and gestures. You also get the Game Space, Kid Space, Smart Sidebar, Multi-Screen, and a lot more.
Oppo A5s Camera
The Oppo A5s has a dual camera set up on the rear – a 13MP primary sensor (f/2.2 aperture) and a 2MP depth sensor (f/2.4 aperture) with 2x zoom.
In daylight, the camera captures decent images with an adequate amount of details. The colour reproduction is great and the HDR works excellently. As for the Portrait mode, the edge detection and blurring effect is just average. The shots captured by the rear cameras sometimes lack sharpness and display a little softness in the corners. Another area where the Oppo A5s has the edge over the Realme 3 is that the images captured by the former have less barrel distortion. Even the exposure seems to be good enough. In low light settings, the camera struggles to perform. It takes longer to focus and also to deliver the captured shots. You can see a lot of noise in the photos with minimal focus on the objects. The camera offers no dedicated night mode.
You can record videos up to 1080p at 30 fps.
Moving onto the 8MP selfie cam (f/2.0 lens), it delivers some impressive images in daylight. The major drawback is the AI beatification feature that works too aggressively to smoothen and soften the skin, thereby making the photos look very artificial. Also, the edge detection of the Portrait mode of the selfie cam is really disappointing.
Oppo A5s Battery
One of the biggest plus points of the Oppo A5s is its battery. The 4230 mAh battery combined with the power-savvy MediaTek processor allows for optimal battery usage. For day-to-day usage and performing routine tasks like calling, texting, listening to music, using social media apps, etc., the battery can last at least an entire day. But if you indulge in binge-watching your favourite series or prolonged gaming sessions, you will see the battery level drop faster.
The connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Dual-band Wi-Fi, Mobile Hotspot, Bluetooth v4.2, micro USB port, 3.5mm jack, FM Radio, and GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS. It has sensors like Fingerprint Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, and Compass.
Oppo A5s Verdict
To conclude, we can say that the Oppo A5s is an elegant smartphone that promises an enjoyable viewing experience and excellent battery life. However, you can also check out other phones in the same price segment as well, like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, the Xiaomi Redmi Y3, and the Realme 3.
