Centre Asks For WhatsApp Username Feature Ban: Know Why Here
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), issued an official notice to Meta-owned WhatsApp India, ordering an immediate halt to the proposed rollout of its "username" feature in the country until official consultations are completed.
"It is felt that the feature may materially increase the incidence of online fraud and identity spoofing," the ministry stated in its notice on their take on the WhatsApp username feature ban, adding that rollout must halt until consultations are completed "to the satisfaction of the Government."
The proposed update allows users to connect via unique @ handles instead of exchanging mobile numbers. While designed to enhance privacy, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) warned that without robust validation, the feature could trigger an influx of phishing attacks, impersonation, and sophisticated "digital arrest" scams by allowing bad actors to spoof trusted government and financial institutions. Meta has been given three days to respond.
Discussions Still Going On And The Process Seems To Be Longer Than It Appears
The discussions have spread like wildfire over the past few days on this WhatsApp username feature ban news. Government is also not at fault; it cares for privacy, and since WhatsApp has the largest social media user base, the added strictness is a good deed to do.
However, responding to this directive, a WhatsApp spokesperson stated, "The feature is not yet live. We have built multiple layers of defence, including holding high-profile names and limiting contact attempts, to protect users against impersonation and fraud."
