The Tata Group has announced it will start making iPhones in India. Apple has been manufacturing iPhones in the country since 2016, with contracts given to three manufacturers: Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron.

Furthermore, the Apple iPhone 15 was the first phone made in the country to ship on the same day as the global units. Now, Tata will take over the operations of the Wistron plant in an acquisition announced by the company.

In a statement, Tata has announced that it is purchasing the Wistron plant in Karnataka to manufacture iPhones in India. The deal worth $125 million (Rs.124.9 crores) will make Tata the first Indian company to produce iPhones. It also marks the exit of Wistron’s operation from the country as it will no longer assemble the phones.

Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, congratulated Tata on the deal and said it will manufacture iPhones in India “within just two and half years”.

He also thanked Wistron for its contribution and appreciated Apple’s continued support in building a global supply chain from India. The minister also reiterated the government’s support of Indian Electronic companies and its commitment to making India a global electronic power.

Tata To Increase Its Collaboration With Apple

The made-in-India iPhones will meet the demands of the domestic as well as the global market via exports. Apart from Tata, Apple will assemble iPhones in India in collaboration with Foxconn and Pegraton.

Reports indicate Tata has been in talks with Wistron for over a year to acquire its Bengaluru plant. It will increase the workforce of the factory and ship iPhones worth at least $1.8 billion till March 2024 as a part of the deal, according to a Bloomberg report. There are more than 10,000 workers currently employed in the factory.

The Indian company has also plans for better collaboration with Apple, including the launch of 100 new Apple stores across the country. Tata is also planning to hire new workers for the Hosur plant, making components for the iPhone. There are several acres of land available on the plant, allowing Tata to expand in the future.
