Jio has unveiled its new JioSpaceFiber service, which will offer satellite-based broadband connectivity in India. This is the first time a company is offering gigabit speeds via satellite connectivity in the country. Reliance demonstrated the service at the India Mobile Congress 2023 in New Delhi.

JioSpaceFiber will offer internet connectivity in India with gigabit speeds in remote areas. It is currently available for testing in various areas, such as Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odisha and ONGC Jorhat in Assam. There is currently no information on the availability and pricing of the service in other areas.

JioSpaceFiber aims to offer everyone an opportunity to get internet connectivity with gigabit speeds, including access to government, education, health and entertainment services.

“Jio has enabled millions of homes and businesses in India to experience broadband internet for the first time. With JioSpaceFiber, we expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected,” said Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio.

JioSpaceFiber will rely on Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), a satellite network provider based in Luxembourg. Moreover, the company’s Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite offers internet with gigabit speeds using its O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites.

Furthermore, the company claims JioSpaceFiber will be “available across the length and breadth of the country at a highly affordable price”.It will compete against services like Eutelsat OneWeb from Bharti Airtel, Project Kuiper from Amazon and Starlink from Space X.

Thanks to its existing 450 million subscribers, Jio is likely to benefit and get an early start in the satellite-based internet connectivity segment. The company has not provided any details about the pricing and availability yet.
