Sony has released a new PS5 firmware update with security fixes as the company continues to deal with jailbreak developments affecting its gaming console. The update arrives ahead of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) launch, which is scheduled for November 19, 2026.

The latest PS5 firmware update carries version number 26.07-14.22.00 and was released on November 2. According to Sony's official patch notes, the update introduces security improvements to the system software. Its reported download size is around 1.267GB.

While Sony has not specifically mentioned GTA 6 in the update notes, its timing has attracted attention because of recent developments in the PS5 jailbreak community. The update could make it harder for users to exploit known security vulnerabilities in the console.

Sony has not explained which vulnerabilities have been addressed or provided further technical details about the security fixes.

Why Is Sony Releasing Security Updates Ahead of GTA 6?

Recent PS5 jailbreak developments have put Sony's console security under greater attention. In September, members of the PlayStation homebrew community released a jailbreak supporting older PS5 firmware versions ranging from 7.00 to 13.60.

This development allowed users with compatible consoles to explore modifications and homebrew software without installing newer system updates.

However, newer firmware versions have created fresh challenges for jailbreak developers. Some games reportedly require more recent system software to download updates, encouraging users to install firmware versions that may include fixes for previously discovered vulnerabilities.

More recently, a PS5 security researcher demonstrated progress involving firmware version 14.10. However, the exploit has not been publicly released, and important limitations remain.

Will GTA 6 Require the Latest PS5 Firmware Update?

With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on November 19, questions have emerged about the minimum PS5 firmware version required to run the game.

Some reports and discussions within the PlayStation community suggest that GTA 6 could require firmware version 14.10 or newer. Other speculation points towards version 14.20 or later.

However, neither Sony nor Rockstar Games has officially confirmed the minimum firmware requirement for GTA 6. There is also no confirmation that the newly released 26.07-14.22.00 update is mandatory to play the game.

For PS5 owners, the latest update is primarily a security release. Those interested in jailbreak developments should also understand that installing newer firmware can affect compatibility with existing exploits.

Sony has not announced whether another firmware update will arrive before GTA 6's November 19 release.
