Huawei has officially launched the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design, its latest tri-fold smartphone and successor to the original Mate XT. The new model has arrived with a redesigned folding mechanism, upgraded hardware and HarmonyOS 7.
The Mate XT 2 has been positioned as a premium device that combines the experience of a regular smartphone with a much larger tablet-like display. Huawei has also focused on improving the hinge, battery life and performance with this generation. Huawei Mate XT 2 Launch has introduced a new generation of the company’s foldable phone with several hardware upgrades.

Samsung's own tri-fold phone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, launched in December 2025 at $2,899 but was pulled from sale in March 2026 after just three months. That means right now, Huawei's Mate XT 2 doesn't really have any direct competitor still on the market.

New Tri-Fold Design Is the Biggest Change
The folding mechanism is one of the biggest changes on the Mate XT 2. The previous Mate XT used a Z-shaped folding design, while the new phone has introduced a different mechanism in which two sections of the display fold inward.
The new system has been described as a U-shaped or G-shaped mechanism. It is aimed at making the tri-fold design more practical while addressing challenges around hinge durability, thickness and stress on the flexible display.
The Mate XT 2 can still be used like a regular smartphone when folded, thanks to its outer display. Users can then unfold the device to access a much larger screen for multitasking, reading, entertainment and productivity.
Huawei has also equipped the phone with the Kirin 9050 Pro chipset. The processor is expected to improve performance while supporting AI features directly on the device.
Battery life has received a major focus as well. The Mate XT 2 has arrived with a reported 6,000mAh battery, which should help power its large foldable display. The phone has also been linked with 100W fast charging support.

The camera system has also been upgraded. The Mate XT 2 is expected to feature a high-resolution main camera alongside ultrawide and periscope telephoto cameras. Reports have also pointed to a 200-megapixel main sensor, although specific camera details should be checked against Huawei's official specifications.
On the software side, the Mate XT 2 has debuted with HarmonyOS 7. The new operating system has been designed to make better use of the phone's multiple screen modes and large unfolded display.
With its redesigned hinge, larger battery, high storage options and new software, the Mate XT 2 has become Huawei's latest push into the premium tri-fold smartphone market.
