Clubhouse Gets Spatial Audio Feature Support on its Platform

Clubhouse, an audio-only chat app, announces the launch of a spatial audio feature that will make voices sound more like they’re coming from different directions, making discussions and virtual events feel more lifelike.

Last year, the application, which is funded by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz; kicked off the social audio craze and became popular for tens of thousands of users, including CEOs and celebrities. Larger tech companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Spotify, which have all created their own social audio chat services, are posing a growing threat.

Clubhouse Now Gets Spatial Audio Feature Support

The new surround-sound-like feature will allow Clubhouse tap into the app’s growing number of performances and entertainment rooms.

According to Justin Uberti, Clubhouse’s head of streaming technology, the app’s algorithm will allocate users a spatial positioning based on how many speakers are in a Clubhouse room and a number of other parameters so that the listener would hear the sounds surround them in their headphones.

Clubhouse’s technology, for example, will recognise the main speaker and position that person’s voice in the “front,” while other people’s laughter may sound as if it’s originating from the listener’s left and right sides, he said.

Uberti said, “I could hear people laughing and the room erupts around me”. “You can imagine in music … there’s a lot of potential”.  He also noted that the spatial technology makes it easy to distinguish when various users are speaking; whereas earlier, individuals would have to pay close attention to the speakers’ cadence and vocal tone.

Clubhouse, which began as an invite-only app and recently became open to all users. It claims to have generated more than 700,000 rooms every day, up from 300,000 in May. Spatial audio will be available first to iOS users, followed by Android users, according to Clubhouse.
