Blinkit has announced a new pricing policy for its ambulance services in India. The company will now charge Rs 2,500 for non-emergency ambulance bookings, while emergency transfers will continue to remain free. Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal announced the decision, explaining that the move aims to keep fully equipped ambulances available for patients who need urgent medical attention.

The new Blinkit Ambulance charges will apply to routine hospital visits, regular check-ups and hospital-to-home transfers. According to Goyal, many people have started using emergency ambulances for journeys that they could otherwise complete through private transport or cab services.

Deepinder Goyal explained that Blinkit's free ambulance service has handled around 42,000 cases so far, including nearly 20,000 emergency cases over the last two years.

However, the company has noticed an increase in non-emergency bookings. These bookings keep emergency vehicles and trained paramedics occupied when other patients may need immediate medical assistance.

Goyal said that every non-emergency booking takes a fully equipped ambulance off the road. The company introduced the Rs 2,500 fee to discourage such bookings and ensure that emergency vehicles remain available for critical situations.

Here are the key details of the new policy:

    • Non-emergency bookings: Rs 2,500 charge.
    • Emergency ambulance services: Free of charge.
    • Covered non-emergency services: Routine hospital visits, check-ups and hospital-to-home transfers.
    • Fee collection: The amount will go to the Eternal Foundation, which operates Blinkit Ambulance.
    • Purpose: To support service expansion and maintain ambulance availability for emergencies.

Goyal said the Rs 2,500 charge is broadly in line with the rates charged by private ambulance operators. The company will use the collected money to support the expansion of its ambulance network.

Blinkit also plans to bring its ambulance service to all major Indian cities over the next two to four years. The management team is working towards achieving this target.

Goyal believes that the 10-minute ambulance service can save thousands of lives if emergency vehicles remain available when patients need them most. The company wants to maintain free emergency support while managing routine bookings through the new pricing policy.
