Apple may have begun internal testing of the rumoured M2 chips on at least nine new Macs — an essential step in the development process that suggests a release date is imminent.

At least two Mac products with an M2 chip expect this year, with the remaining Macs arriving later in the year. The M2 processor expects to be the M1’s successor, bringing improvements in graphics handling.

The M2 chips would propel Apple even further into its ongoing transition away from Intel chips and toward its own. Within three years of the introduction of the first Apple silicon processor, the company had covered nearly all Mac products that previously used Intel chipsets.

Apple will make even more progress with M2, which will outperform the original chips in terms of performance. Apple is testing a MacBook Air with an M2 chip, codenamed J413, that has eight CPU cores and ten graphics cores, as opposed to the existing M1-powered MacBook Air’s eight graphics cores.

J473 is the codename for a Mac mini with an M2 chip. It will have specifications similar to the MacBook Air, but according to the report, a “M2 Pro” variant codenamed J474 is being tested for the Mac mini.
Even the MacBook Pro is likely to get a taste of the M2 chip, albeit in a lower-end model. It will be having a codename J493 and will have specifications similar to the MacBook Air.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and “M2 Max” chips may be in testing. J414 is a possible codename for this. The M2 Max could have 12 CPU cores and 38 graphics cores, as well as 64GB of unified memory.  The J416 MacBook Pro, a 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips.

This model’s specifications may be the same as those of the 14-inch MacBook Pro.  The successor to the M1 Ultra chip would be used in a Mac Pro with a codename J180, but the report does not specify what it is called during testing. This chipset, possibly M2 Ultra, will be the most powerful of all its variants.

With Apple’s Mac business thriving following the release of the M1 silicon chip. The rumour mill is working overtime to figure out what we might see in 2022. While nothing is confirmed at this time, current rumours suggest that a slew of new Mac computers will be coming out in 2022.

Some people are expecting to have the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. While others may have upgraded M1 Max chips and still others are to have a brand new M2 processing chip.
