Apple Halted Plans To Use China’s YMTC Chips: Reports

    Apple Said to Halt Use of YTMC Memory Chips
  • Apple has frozen plans to use memory chips from China’s Yangtze Memory Technologies Co (YMTC) in its products. This happened after Washington tightened export regulations on Chinese technology companies, according to the Nikkei on Monday. Apple had previously planned to begin using state-funded YMTC’s NAND flash memory chips as early as this year.

    The US tech giant was considering purchasing up to 40 per cent of the chips required for all iPhone models from YMTC. Apple did not react immediately to Reuters’ request for comment, and YMTC declined to comment.

    United States added YMTC and 30 other Chinese businesses to a list of corporations that US investigators have been unable to investigate, escalating tensions with Beijing and triggering a 60-day clock that could result in even harsher penalties.

    US Commerce Department is also investigating whether YMTC violated Washington’s export rules. by supplying chips to the blocked Chinese telecommunications company Huawei. Apple had plans to use state-funded YMTC’s NAND flash memory chips as early as this year.

    The Biden administration’s comprehensive set of export limits on China attempts to stifle Beijing’s technological and military achievements by cutting off the country’s supply of specific semiconductor chips manufactured anywhere in the world using US equipment. Apple did not react immediately to Reuters’ request for comment, and YMTC declined to comment.
