Apple’s iOS 16 update was released to the public on September 12, 2022. It finally brought some of the most anticipated features such as a customizable lock screen, Live activities, Focus Mode and much more.

Apple is frequently criticized for being late to the party and releasing features for iPhones late as compared to its Android competitors. However, this notion is diminishing nowadays since Apple has started giving attention to some of the basic features that iOS didn’t offer earlier.

Also, it is commonly seen that, although Apple releases a lot of features late to iOS, they are much more polished and user-friendly than what Android phones offer. While we just got the iOS 16 for our iPhones, the next-generation version of iOS, i.e. iOS 17, could be announced at Apple WWDC 2023 June event. It will likely be released to the public on September 12, 2023 (Expected).

iOS 17: Announcement Date and Release Timeline

iOS 17

iOS 17 will most probably be announced at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference as the successor to iOS 16. According to previous year trends, the Cupertino giant will announce the next version of iOS in June 2023.

Going by Apple’s history of rolling out the latest version of iOS, here’s an estimate of iOS 17’s release timeline. For the first few weeks after the announcement, the Beta version of iOS 17 will be made available for a limited number of users. For the uninitiated, the Beta version is released for volunteers who are willing to try out the new experience. As the new version might contain bugs or other issues, these volunteers help Apple get notified of such unwanted issues so that the final version can be released later for the general public.

Thereafter, the company will start rolling out iOS 17 for all users when the new iPhones, i.e. iPhone 15 series arrive in late September or early October. The stable version of iOS 17 will then start rolling out to all eligible iPhones.

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X

  • iPhone SE (2nd generation)

The new iPhones will arrive in September 2023 and will run on iOS 17 out-of-the-box. Generally, Apple provides iOS updates to devices that are not older than 5 years. The iPhone 8 & iPhone 8 Plus have recently received the iOS 16 update. However, it is unlikely that they may get updated to iOS 17, as they were launched back in 2017.

All other iPhones which were launched before the iPhone 8 series will not be eligible to upgrade to iOS 17. These devices weren’t eligible for iOS 16 as well.

iOS 17: New Features & Expectations

Apple has been working on some exclusive features in the past. For example, the technology giant finally introduced Always On Display in the latest iPhone 14 Pros. Lately, Apple has released a ton of customization features that were earlier available only on Android. Lock screen widgets, focus mode, live activity etc. were some of the highlighted features in the recent iOS 16.

However, there’s a lot more that Apple needs to offer in iOS which Android has had for years. Here are five key features and improvements that Apple might bring for iPhones with the iOS 17.

Call Recording

This has to be one of the most demanded features by iPhone users. A feature that has served Android users for almost a decade, is still a dream for iOS users to date. Apple might likely allow Call Recording with iOS 17.

Improved Notifications

Reading and Managing notifications on iOS is messy, especially on the lock screen. It is far more convenient to access & manage them on Android. With iOS 17, it is expected that Apple will take some steps to improve this experience.

Dual Apps

App cloning is a very useful tool that allows users to create clones of applications such as WhatsApp so that they can access multiple accounts.

Split Screen

It is one of the most important features of multitasking. Being able to view two apps at once is a really handy productivity feature that lets you save time in repeatedly switching apps.

Better Siri

Apple is working on a way to drop the “Hey” part of Siri’s typical listen phrase, so it’ll start listening to simply “Siri.”

These are only a few of the many expected upgrades that users have been demanding for years.

Apple is not always the first one to introduce new features, but whenever it does release any, it’s likely to be more seamless and consistent than any other competitor.
