Without further ado, let’s look at the entries!
Ghost Recon: Wildlands
Released – 2017
Publishers – Ubisoft
Ubisoft has been heading in a new direction ever since the late 2010s. While Ghost Recon, as a series, had been more geared towards linear gameplay, this changed with 2017’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands. The gameplay was expanded to fit a new, massive open world. Players could pair with others online and go on team missions. Each mission has to be approached tactically, with each player having a particular role in the team. While the gunplay is excellent, Ubisoft received flak for the large but empty open world. With multiple patches improving the game after its release, Ghost Recon: Wildlands is now one of the best shooters you can play.
Grand Theft Auto 5
Released – 2013
Publishers – Rockstar Games
Rockstar Games has been keeping every gamer on their toes for the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. Until then, GTA 5 will definitely keep you occupied. The game has received multiple remasters for PC and the newer generation consoles. Moreover, GTA Online has been booming ever since its conception. If you had to play an open-world game, there can be none better than Grand Theft Auto 5.
The new direction of the narrative, with three main characters and a lived-in Los Santos, makes for the perfect GTA game. Its third-person shooting mechanics have been refined as well and will give you an idea about how Sniper Elite 5‘s shooting mechanics may function. Additionally, the modding community of GTA 5 has ensured that there are plenty of content and mods to try out, whether online or offline. In truth, despite being almost a decade old, GTA 5 is one of the best games of all time.
Hell Let Loose
Released – 2019
Publisher – Team17
Since Sniper Elite 5 is a game based on World War II, we’ve decided to put Hell Let Loose on our list of the games to play before the release of Sniper Elite 5. Hell Let Loose is a multiplayer shooting game that features massive 50v50 battles. The game takes realism quite seriously, as you won’t find any Heads Up Display (HUD) or health bars to guide you. You’ll just have to be patient and listen to the others to process them correctly. Sniping in the game is difficult too. You won’t get any breathing mechanics here. The only advantage you have will be on higher ground and hoping that your bullet hits the target. Of course, you’ll have to take cover as well. Sniping in open areas will spell almost certain death.
Escape From Tarkov
Released – 2017
Publisher – Battlestate Games
Escape From Tarkov was released all the way back in 2017. It’s still in the beta phase, with closed multiplayer matches taking place. Patches are being released frequently to ensure that the game works smoothly before the final release. Regardless, it’s still an excellent shooting game. It takes realism seriously, and the game’s premise means that resources are scarce. The gunfights are surprisingly intense, and you can’t trust any of the players to see you through to the end of a match. You’ll have to fight and fend for your survival; there’s no way around it. Moreover, the weapon system in the game is exceptional, with plenty of customisation options. It’s a fairly challenging game, but it’s fun to play once you understand how the game works.

Sniper Ghost Warrior: Contracts
Released – 2019
Publisher – CI Games
The only other game that comes close to the Sniper Elite series in terms of sniping gameplay is Sniper Ghost Warrior: Contracts. While it didn’t receive rave reviews upon release, it’s been updated to improve on specific mechanics. Targets are assigned through missions, and the mission worlds are semi-open. You won’t find a completely open world to exercise your creative muscles. Nonetheless, the semi-open nature is good enough for a game such as this. The gunplay is solid and decent, and the sniping mechanics are highly realistic. You’ll have to take every possible factor into account, such as bullet drop, breathing, and wind speeds. While we’re not huge fans of the mission-based gameplay, Sniper Ghost Warrior: Contracts is still a worthwhile sniper game.
Sniper Elite Series
Released – 2005
Publisher – Rebellion
If we’re talking about the best games to play before Sniper Elite 5 releases, we have to mention the other Sniper Elite games. While the first two games are good, the series truly took off with Sniper Elite 3 and Sniper Elite 4. The gory bullet cam and the solid sniping mechanics have garnered legions of fans worldwide. A massive open world has been introduced, giving the players immense freedom to approach a mission the way they see fit. If there’s a perfect way for virtually killing Nazis in a game, the Sniper Elite series comes closest to it.
These were our top picks of the games to play before Sniper Elite 5 releases. What did you think of the list? Are there any other shooter games that you’d add here? Let us know your opinions and thoughts in the comment section. We’ll be sure to try out your recommendations!
