Many devices continue to sit unused at home even when they still work. This creates what can be described as a drawer economy, devices that have value but are no longer being used.
Recommerce changes what happens next. Instead of remaining idle, a device can be traded in, verified, refurbished and sold to another consumer. This gives the phone another ownership cycle while helping the original owner recover some of its value.
As smartphone adoption matures, this transition from ownership to reuse is becoming increasingly important.
5G Phones Are Already Getting A Second Life
One of the strongest signals from the 2026 report is the changing composition of trade-ins.
54.6% of devices traded in on Cashify are now 5G-enabled, compared with 36% in 2024.
That is more than a technology adoption story. It shows that newer-generation phones are already entering the secondary market.
Consumers upgrading from 5G devices are creating a supply of relatively recent smartphones for refurbished buyers. This also changes the perception of the used-phone market: a refurbished device does not necessarily mean an old device.
The secondary market is increasingly carrying phones with technologies that are still relevant to today’s users.
Refurbished Demand Is Moving Into The Premium Segment
The demand side of the market is changing too.
The ₹20,000-₹45,000 price band emerged as the leading demand segment for refurbished smartphones. Consumers are therefore looking beyond basic affordability and considering refurbished devices when they want access to better specifications without paying the full price of a new device.
Apple’s numbers make this even clearer. The brand represented 32.6% of organised trade-ins and 65.3% of certified refurbished sales.
The Apple iPhone 13 was particularly prominent, accounting for 6.93% of trade-ins and 15.5% of refurbished purchases.
This shows how demand can continue beyond the first ownership cycle. A popular smartphone can move from one user to another while retaining significant market value.
Recommerce Is Growing Beyond Smartphones
The next major shift is the expansion of the category itself.
Laptops, tablets and wearables accounted for 16.7% of total refurbished sales, nearly doubling their share.
That suggests consumers are becoming more comfortable with the idea of buying technology that has had a previous owner, rather than applying that behaviour only to smartphones.
It also creates a larger circular technology ecosystem. A laptop, tablet or wearable can be repaired, tested, refurbished and returned to the market just like a smartphone.
Trust Is What Can Take Recommerce Mainstream
A growing secondary market also needs stronger systems around it.
When you buy a used device, knowing its history and condition matters. Verification, quality checks and reliable refurbishment processes can make the difference between an informal resale transaction and an organised recommerce experience.
