Even then, developers are bringing out some of the latest games for this console. It has provided us with the best that gaming can offer.
Many of these games are PlayStation 5 compatible, thanks to backward compatibility. Therefore, it’s clear that these games aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. From the Uncharted games’ cinematic masterpieces to classics like Tetris, the PlayStation 4 continues to churn out amazing games. Now, let’s have a look at the entries on this list!

Dark Souls 3
Starting with quite a challenging game, Dark Souls 3 is the proper culmination of FromSoftware‘s learnings from the previous games. It provides a challenge that might frustrate a few beginners. However, you always receive an appropriate reward for your tribulations. While Dark Souls 2 was good and improved in some aspects over the first game, it provided a scattered storyline that didn’t quite fit the bill. The first game laid down the basics for every Soulsborne game that you can come across today. However, like any first iteration, it had multiple issues that needed fixing.
With Dark Souls 3, you get the most polished version of a Soulsborne game. This base laid the foundation for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring. Dark Souls 3 provides multiple vistas that will capture your attention and enemies that will force you to think on your feet. The gameplay is much faster and more precise than its predecessors, and even new players are rewarded well for their patience and grit.
If you ever wanted to try out a game by FromSoftware, this is where you should start.

Tetris Effect
Yes, there’s a reason why we’ve included Tetris Effect in this list. Tetris is an exceptionally addictive game. Regardless of how old it is, new versions have been released to keep things fresh. There’s a good chance that Tetris Effect is the epitome of what a Tetris game could be. It’s doubtful that a newer Tetris game will be able to topple what the developers have created with Tetris Effect. Of course, we’re open to being proven wrong.
The game is compatible with PlayStation’s Virtual Reality technology, called PSVR. This feature makes this puzzle game stand out from the rest. It also incorporates a Journey mode that provides excellent soundtracks and environments. When using the PSVR and playing this mode, the entire scenario becomes a veritable trip through different environments and worlds. Combine this with the already fantastic gameplay, and you’ve got a Tetris game that doesn’t change the basics but elevates the experience like no other puzzle game.

Doom
This is the remake of the incredibly popular 1990s classic game. The developers have taken the philosophy of what made the original game such a hit and improved on it in every way possible. From the excellent visuals to the fast-paced gameplay, nothing’s amiss. If you have a tooth for action games where the storyline hardly matters, and you get to destroy many monsters, Doom is the first game you should be playing.
This rendition of the game sees you take control of the titular Doomguy. You land on a Martian colony infested by the demons of Hell. Almost instantly, the action kicks off. While the storyline isn’t something that will keep you hooked, it does offer some interesting twists to keep itself in the running. Moreover, the gameplay is so brutal that you’ll instantly be smashing the heads off of Hellspawn with your massive shotgun. There’s satisfaction here that can’t exactly be put into words and needs to be experienced from the very outset. For your action cravings and stress-busting desires, play Doom as soon as possible, and don’t miss out on one of the best PS4 games in the action genre!

Ratchet & Clank
If you’re a new gamer or have been playing games casually, you may not have heard of Ratchet & Clank. This is one of the best PS4 games and gaming franchises of all time. The original game had been released for the PlayStation 2, and fans were asking for a new game. Sony listened to the players and brought forth a beautiful remake for the PlayStation 4. This isn’t a complete remaster or remake, though, as it contains elements from the original game that made it so famous in the first place.
This time, however, the writing is far better while keeping the signature sense of humour loved by fans worldwide. Improvements to the base gameplay make exploring and platforming through the environments a beautiful experience. In case you didn’t know, Insomniac Games was the developer behind this game. Their track record with the recent releases of Spider-Man and the highly underrated Sunset Overdrive shows that these developers know what they’re doing. To convince you even further, this game had been nominated for the BAFTA Games Award for Best Family Game as well, apart from other nominations.
As a different, more family-friendly action-adventure game, this is something that you should try out.

Horizon Zero Dawn
Guerrilla Games developed this fantastic open-world game and released it to the masses in 2017. Almost instantly, everyone fell in love with what they had brought forth. Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best PS4 games of all time, and there’s little doubt regarding this. The open world crafted by the developers is teeming with post-apocalyptic creatures that combine both the artificial and natural to create something truly unique. The visuals are gorgeous and take full advantage of the PS4’s hardware. You could be climbing a tower to scour the area and then get lost watching the sun set on the horizon.
The game provides an exciting new setting where humans are no longer the dominant species. Their constant belittling of nature and experimentation has led to the rise of robots that take the shape of various prehistoric creatures. Humans have now regressed to a position where they form tribes and keep mostly to themselves. You take control of Aloy, who has to discover the secrets of her past while also saving humanity from complete extinction. The storyline and characterisation in this game are on par with the best games of all time.
This unique game takes everything good about RPGs and open-world games and combines them to give you something fresh. If you haven’t played the game yet, it’s high time that you do!

Marvel’s Spider-Man
It had been a while since we last received a good Spider-Man game. While Spider-Man 2 was a great game and revolutionised the web-swinging mechanics, no other Spider-Man game came close to matching the same delivery. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows came close to presenting us with something unique and fresh but ultimately tanked due to a lack of sales. However, with Insomniac Games‘ rendition of Spider-Man, they met their targets instantly.
Apart from the beautiful rendition of New York City, superb storyline, and impressive characterisation, the combat and general gameplay are fantastic. Swinging through New York City has never looked nor felt better than this. The fluid gameplay mechanics help in making natural transitions as well. Moreover, you get excellent combat inspired by the FreeFlow combat system of the Batman: Arkham Trilogy. Even if you’re not a fan of the superhero genre, this game is a must-play if you’re wading through the best PS4 games.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
We were bound to include an Uncharted game on this list because they’re just that good! The previous entries in the series focused more on pure action elements. With A Thief’s End, Nathan Drake finally grows up. Don’t get us wrong – there are plenty of action sequences and beautiful environments to platform through. However, this time you get a storyline that not only matches the smooth gameplay but might even surpass it.
Naughty Dog also shows off their development prowess through the gameplay. The graphics and physics engine are at their peak. Very few modern games have been able to harness the power of a gaming console and harness it this well. Apart from this, the story will keep you hooked as it combines intimate social drama at loggerheads with the over-the-top antics of the entire game. You must experience this game for yourself, as no amount of words can do justice to its brilliance.

Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima had the daunting task of being the last PlayStation 4 exclusive. Considering the significant number of excellent PlayStation 4 exclusives that we received over the years, the hype was strong with this one. Fortunately, Ghost of Tsushima lived up to the hype and then some. It was a proper swan song to one of the best consoles to have ever graced the gaming universe. A fitting end to the console – one of the best consoles ever, paired with one of the best PS4 games of all time.
Set in feudal Japan, the game puts you in the shoes of Jin Sakai. Sakai is a samurai who wants to protect Tsushima island from the Mongolian invaders. The game features a beautifully rendered Japan that seems like it was sculpted straight from the movies of Akira Kurosawa. Clearly, there was a notable influence here with the game’s setting. Apart from this, the gameplay, narrative, and art direction are all worth the praise. While the open world is vast and littered with quests everywhere, you may find difficulty settling in at first. Nevertheless, all you need to do is give it some time, and you’ll be striking swords with the best the game has to offer.

The Last Of Us Part 2
While Naughty Dog flexes its muscles for action sequences through their Uncharted franchise, it’s with The Last of Us that they show their storytelling brawn. The first game in the series was released in 2013 and was an instant hit. It showed how difficult a post-apocalyptic setting could be from a humanistic point of view. Building from the initial success they received with the game, The Last Of Us Part 2 showcased how the developers have improved their writing chops even further, adding excellence to already one of the best PS4 games available.
While we could talk about the gameplay and the open world, you can rest assured that both of them are top-notch. Naughty Dog‘s penchant for creating fleshed out worlds, characters, and refined gameplay is evergreen. What we need to talk about is the storyline. With The Last Of Us Part 2, players are put into morally ambiguous situations that reflect the severity of the situation. The game could divide fans of the original game into different camps, thanks to the story’s final stages. Regardless, it’s most definitely worth playing through. In addition to this, you also get one of the most complex and dynamic gameplay you’ll ever find in a PS4 game.
Once you play through this game, there’s a good chance that you’ll never forget this gaming experience.

God of War
How could we make this list and not include Santa Monica Studio‘s magnum opus, God of War? The franchise’s first three instalments were pure action games with intriguing storylines but focusing more on the brutal hack-and-slash gameplay. With the 2018 edition of God of War, the studio took a few steps back, completed some breathing exercises, flexed its creative muscles, and gave us a behemoth of a game. This game isn’t a complete remake of the previous entries. However, it is a different direction – the right direction.
You control Kratos (obviously), who’s now on Earth searching for peace. But of course, peace and Kratos don’t go well together. Soon enough, he’s entangled in a war of the gods that takes him to the depths of Helheim to the Giant’s Fingers in Jotunheim, one of the tallest mountains in Midgard. In addition to this, you get more level gameplay that focuses equally on both strategy and action. The pacing is deliberate, the action intense, and the story is intriguing with some big reveals. What else would you want from a God of War game? There’s no excuse whatsoever to miss playing one of the best PS4 games today.
