WhatsApp, a popular messaging app, recently released a report stating that they banned around 71.1 lakh (7.11 million) Indian accounts during September. This action was taken to follow the IT rules. Out of these, 25.7 lakh (2.57 million) accounts were banned even before any users reported them. Indian accounts are identified using the country code ‘+91’.
The report, often called the ‘user-safety report,’ includes information about complaints received from users and the actions WhatsApp took in response. In September alone, WhatsApp received 10,442 user reports. These reports covered various topics, including account support, ban appeals, and safety concerns.

WhatsApp Responses To User Reports
During this period, WhatsApp received six orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee. The platform complied with all six orders. When WhatsApp says they ‘actioned’ accounts, it means they took some kind of action based on the user reports. This action could involve either banning an account or restoring a previously banned account, depending on the nature of the complaint.
However, not all reported accounts are banned. WhatsApp reviews reports and takes action only if the reported account violates Indian laws or WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. Additionally, some reports might not lead to actions due to various reasons, such as the user needing help to access their account or if the reported account doesn’t violate any rules.

WhatsApp’s Proactive Approach To Safety Complaints
WhatsApp also clarified that they respond to all safety-related complaints except if the complaint is similar to a previous one. In such cases, where the issue is a duplicate, they might not respond again.
This effort by WhatsApp aims to maintain user safety and ensure that the platform is used responsibly, adhering to both legal requirements and the app’s guidelines.
