Reports of Instagram down started appearing across several countries on March 11, as thousands of users faced problems accessing the popular social media platform. Many people said the app was not loading properly, while others reported issues with direct messages and disappearing chat themes.
The outage tracking website Downdetector showed a sudden spike in complaints during the day. According to the platform, more than 1,300 users in India reported issues with Instagram around 12 PM IST. Similar complaints also came from users in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Users took to other social media platforms and online forums to report that the app was not working normally. Some said their messages disappeared, while others could not load their feeds or use the search feature. So, here is what happened today.
Thousands Report Instagram Down Issues
The Instagram down reports increased quickly during the late morning hours. Data from Downdetector shows that the number of complaints started rising around 9 AM IST and peaked at about 12 PM IST.

The outage tracking platform recorded more than 13,000 reports from the United States and around 200 reports from the United Kingdom during the disruption.
According to the data, users mainly reported problems with accessing the mobile app and some of its core features.
Reported issues include:
- Problems opening the Instagram mobile app
- Feed and timeline not loading
- Direct messages (DMs) not appearing
- Chat themes disappearing from conversations
- Search tool not working properly
Downdetector collects outage information through user reports and other monitoring sources, which means the actual number of affected users could be higher than the reported figures.
Users Complain About Missing Messages And Features
Many users shared their frustration online after noticing that several features stopped working. Some said their message inbox appeared empty even though they had earlier notifications.
Others reported that they could not scroll through chats or search for contacts on the platform.
One user posted that their message page suddenly stopped showing conversations. Another said they could not use the search tool or scroll through their messages, suggesting the app was “completely broken” during the outage.
At the time of writing, Meta Platforms has not released an official statement about the Instagram down issue. Users are now waiting for the company to fix the problem and restore normal service.
