  • Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced in Bengaluru that India will launch its first “Made-in-India” semiconductor chip. This will be launched between September and October 2025. Thus, this chip is developed through a collaboration between Tata Electronics and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation. First made-in-india chipset marks a significant step in India’s ambition to strengthen its semiconductor industry.

    The production of first made-in-India chipset will take place at India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant located in Dholera, Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the Semicon India program in December 2021. This initiative is a key component of it. So, the government has committed Rs 76,000 crore to develop a full-fledged semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem within the country.

    Additionally, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has received Rs 334 crore from the government to advance research and development in gallium nitride (GaN) technology, which is essential for semiconductors used in various applications such as telecom and power.

    Advancements In AI And Semiconductor Research

    In related developments, the government is also launching the India AI Mission portal within the next week. This online portal will serve as a platform for central ministries, state governments, and other stakeholders to access high-performance computing resources at subsidized rates. So, the portal will support the AI development efforts with approximately 14,000 graphics processing units (GPUs). Also, it is provided by companies like Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, Tata Communications, and AWS’s managed service providers.

    The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), established as an independent business division within the Digital India Corporation, is spearheading the country’s efforts. This division has the autonomy to develop and implement long-term strategies. This will aid in establishing semiconductor manufacturing facilities and a semiconductor design ecosystem.

    With these initiatives, India’s semiconductor market is on a path to significant growth, expected to reach $63 billion by 2026 according to a Reuters report.
