H2O OS Could Be The Name of The Unified OS of OnePlus and Oppo

Earlier in 2021, OnePlus announced it is merging its R&D team with OPPO. The company claims it is doing so for streamlining operations and capitalising on shared resources. Moreover, the company claimed Oxygen OS will continue to run on its smartphones in India. Now, the latest leak reveals that the possible OxygenOS-ColosOS unified skin name could be H2O OS.

Although, both companies’ software will remain separate and continue to serve their individual regions. However, they will share a common codebase. This will help in standardizing its software experience and streamline the development process for future OxygenOS updates. OnePlus says the change will also allow the company to guarantee better Android update support going forward. Here’s what we know of the possible H2O OS as of now:

Meanwhile, talks around OxygenOS and the upcoming unified OS have surfaced a lot. Folks have very different opinions on it right now — some like the new ColorOS-based OxygenOS 12. Whereas, some think it’s the end of OnePlus. And, do you guys even remember Hydrogen OS? OnePlus’ Android skin for China. It’s dead and is replaced by the ColorOS. But, as per new rumours, OnePlus isn’t over with the word “Hydrogen” yet.

OxygenOS Now H2O OS?

According to Mukul Sharma (aka stufflistings), a trademark filing for “H2O OS” was issued by OnePlus. It gives us a hint that OnePlus might name the OxygenOS-ColorOS skin as H2O OS. It would be an amalgamation of OnePlus’ OS names: OxygenOS (for global markets) and HydrogenOS (for China).

However, chances of this H2O OS branding happening might be a little far fetched. As OnePlus filed the trademark for this seven years ago in 2015, i.e seven years ago. This is exactly when the Hydrogen OS first launched in China. Whatever be the case, a name change is highly possible and it might apply for both OnePlus and Oppo smartphones. Meaning, the compatible phones receiving the unified OS update will see the name change.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau had earlier said that despite a deeper integration with Oppo, OnePlus will continue to operate independently. “As for the OnePlus brand, we will continue to operate independently, focused on providing you with the best possible products and experience as we have always done. We will continue launching OnePlus products, holding events (hopefully in person soon), and engaging directly with you for feedback through the same OnePlus channels as before. OnePlus’ commitment to you remains the same,” Lau had said.
