    What exactly is Air Charge?

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has introduced a new wireless charging technology. Known as Air Charge, the new technology will completely how electronic devices will be able to charge in the future.

Current wireless charging technology makes use of a magnetic pad to charge your device. Xiaomi’s new technology, called Air Charge, offers a true wireless charging solution for various electronics.

What exactly is Air Charge?

Basically, Air Charge is Xiaomi’s name for wireless electricity. The new charging method works by charging your smartphone over the air. The technology is made possible using the concept of space positioning and combining it with energy transmission.

Xiaomi has also developed an isolated charging pile. A five phase antenna is used to determine the exact location of the device. The pile has a phase control array of 144 antennas which help in the transmission of mm-wide waves.

The smartphone which will make use of the technology will consist of an array of antennas. The “beacon antennas” will relay the exact position of the device to the charging pile. The “receiving antennas”, which consist of 14 antennas are responsible for the conversion of mm-wide waves to electricity.

However, the Air Charge is still in its early stages and will support only 5-watt charging. The company also claims that physical obstacles will not affect the efficiency at which devices at charged. According to the Chinese manufacturer, the supports charging multiple devices within a radius of a few meters, with each device charging at 5W per hour.

The technology also enables users to charge various electronic devices such as smartwatches, speakers and might even power smart home devices.

Xiaomi Global CEO has also said that the company is still working on the technology, and has not revealed when it can be used for commercial purposes.
