Android 16 beta 2 rolls out with these features

Google introduces powerful features with the Android 16 beta 2 update to boost security and performance:

    • Developer Verification: Starting September 2026, apps in select regions need verified developers for installation on certified Android devices. ADB installs remain exempt for testing. New APIs support verification checks.
    • SMS OTP Protection: SMS with retriever hashes face a three-hour delay for most apps to prevent hijacking. Core apps like SMS, dialer, and system apps are exempt. The SMS Retriever API ensures timely OTP access.

    • Custom App Icons: Apps and folder previews now support multiple icon shapes. Developers must optimize adaptive icons for all styles.
    • Efficient Garbage Collection: The Android Runtime (ART) uses a Generational CMC Garbage Collector, targeting short-lived objects. It reduces CPU load, improves performance, and saves battery.
    • Health Connect Enhancements: Native step tracking via device sensors simplifies data access for apps with READ_STEPS permission. New ExerciseSegment and ExerciseSession data types include weight, set index, and RPE.

Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 is available on select Pixel devices via the Android Beta Program. Non-Pixel users can test it using 64-bit system images in Android Studio’s emulator.
