Realme Narzo 50i Review – The Basic Phone With Big Battery

Realme Narzo 50i is the brand’s new entry-level smartphone, with a big battery for extended use and an octa-core CPU. This is in fact the cheapest phone offered by Realme. The Realme Narzo 50i reflects the attitude and personality of young folks with a very distinctive, street style Diagonal Stripe Design. The device features a 6.50-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 720 by 1600 pixels. Realme Narzo 50i is powered by Realme UI Go Edition and comes with 32GB of internal storage that can be increased by a microSD card (up to 256GB) through a dedicated slot. It also offers a Super Power Saving Mode that allows you to handle a variety of tasks with only 5% battery life. Aside from standard photos, the smartphone comes with a little bit of everything that will help in smooth functioning.

The 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage edition of the Realme Narzo 50i is priced in India at Rs. 7,499, while the 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage variant costs Rs. 8,999. Mint Green and Carbon Black are two of the colour options available. The device is available at major online selling platforms like Flipkart and Amazon.

Before we talk in detail about the Realme Narzo 50i, let’s see what the on-paper specs look like:

Realme Narzo 50i smartphone features a quite similar design to the Realme Narzo 30A, and the Narzo series’ strap style is nothing new. Carbon Black and Mint Green are two attractive colour options for the smartphone. The Black and Green tint options give the camera a professional appearance, while the crop looks unique as well. There is no mention of which protection is used on the display, so I would recommend getting tempered glass for the screen. The company fails to provide a back case which is very disappointing considering all the other brands offer a soft case along with their smartphones at this price point. On the right side, you get a power button with the volume rockers. The left side has the SIM tray with the support of two nano-SIM cards and one micro SD card. On the bottom of the phone, you get a 3.5 mm audio jack, a micro USB charging port and a mic.

Thankfully, the company offers splash-proof resistance, which is a nice attribute to have in the entry-level market. In terms of dimension, the device has an 8.9mm thickness built-in. It didn’t appear to be any bigger than the Narzo 50A, though. It’s also lighter than the previous model, with dimensions of 165.2 x 76.4 x 8.9 mm and a weight of 195 grammes. The phone is quite thin and slim. It feels comfortable and doesn’t feel heavy in your hands.

The bezels in the front area are thin, while the bezel at the bottom is a little narrow. The only drawback of the design would be the location of the speakers. The speakers are located at the backside of the phone with a very thin grill which can easily be covered by hand while using it and hence the sound output decreases drastically. Overall, I liked the design of the realme narzo 50i. 

Realme Narzo 50 sports a 6.5-inch screen with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels, a 20:9 aspect ratio, and a 270PPI density on the front. The display is quite big for the low-cost smartphone category, and it also works well. The display is an IPS LCD with a screen-to-body ratio of 80.8 per cent and a brightness of 400 nits. The display is bright enough to use in broad sunlight. The IPS waterdrop LCD panel on the 6.5-inch display offers the appropriate colours and contrast for regular use. There are thin bezels around the corners but you get a pretty big chain at the bottom which is acceptable at this price point.

You will, however, be missing the normal Corning glass shield as well as any advanced display features. Now talking about the overall display experience, I would say it does a good job for those who like to watch YouTube and web series on OTT platforms.

Even among affordable chipsets, the Unisoc SC9863A processor appears modest. Performance and energy efficiency have improved with the latest CPUs from the same company, as well as Qualcomm and Mediatek.

Realme Narzo 50i is equipped with a fairly basic octa-core chipset. However, as you may be aware, the processing power would be limited, with only 1.6 GHz core speed available. You will have some difficulties multitasking with this processor, but if you’re using the phone just to check your social media feed and watch YouTube videos, you should be fine.

I’ll be honest here if you are thinking of buying this smartphone for playing games like PUBG mobile or COD mobile, kindly do not buy this. Surprisingly, thanks to the Realme Go’s UI capabilities, light games like Subway Surfers, Temple Run and Candy Crush can be enjoyed on this smartphone.

Remember that you’ll be using Android 11 out of the box, so there’s a chance you’ll get some advanced features as well. Since you get the go version of the Android the UI seems pretty smooth and you won’t face any lags or shutters while doing day to day tasks. In terms of storage units, you’ll have two options for selecting the device that best suits your needs. For starters, the base model has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, while the higher model has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. You’ll also get an additional storage expansion option to help you increase your storage. The 2GB RAM unit will work like a charm for basic tasks like calling, WhatsApp, Facebook and expecting more than this would not be justified.

Realme Narzo 50i runs on Android 11 with the company’s own layer of Realme Go UI on top. The interface is very clean and smooth to use. As it comes with the Realme Go edition, you don’t get any bloatware pre-installed on the smartphone, which is a great thing. Users get an app door where they can keep all their applications. Since it is a Go edition, you won’t get all the features that you usually get and a full-fledged Android 11 operating system; but don’t worry there are still some Android 11 features present in this smartphone. You get all the Go edition Google apps installed on the device and the app launching time is decent too. The overall experience with the UI was pretty good.

Although the camera’s quality of Realme Narzo 50i isn’t as good as it could be, it does the job well enough to take acceptable photos. While exposure to light can be confusing, the colours and contrast come out so vividly. Everything looks fresh in daylight photos, thanks to AI software rendering via the main 8MP camera.

Although there was no option for a secondary camera on the backside of the smartphone. The default camera app, on the other hand, offers a variety of features and filters that may be used in different situations. In terms of video recording, you may rely on the main camera, which can record at a resolution of 1080p. The video resolution can also be reduced to 720p.

Low-light images, on the other hand, are a complete disaster, and portrait shots sometimes lack proper focus. The edges of images appear smooth most of the time. The 5MP front selfie lens, on the other hand, has a beauty-enhancing filter that will enhance your appearance. Additionally, you can take natural photographs from the primary setting. 

Autofocus, Exposure Compensation, ISO Control, Continuous Shooting, HDR mode, Face Detection, and Touch to Focus are among the other advanced features included in Realme Narzo 50i.

You will get a Li-Po 5000 mAh battery capacity inside the thin body of Realme Narzo 50i. The battery lasts for a pretty good amount of time as you cannot do many heavy tasks on this device considering the hardware. You can get more than 8 hours of screen time with this battery, which you can use to watch your favourite web series or browse the Internet continuously. It also has a Super Power Saving Mode that lets you do a variety of tasks while just using 5% of the battery.

The smartphone, on the other hand, charges the battery using the old-fashioned micro-USB cable. In addition, you also get the reverse charging capability. For an average user, it will easily last more than one day and can even last for up to 2 days for a light user.  It comes with the 10W charging adaptor which takes a lot of time to charge the big 5000 mah battery. Talking about the charging time, the 10W adaptor will take almost three hours to completely charge the device from 0 to 100%.

There is a single speaker grill located on the backside of the Realme Narzo 50i. The speaker is not very loud and offers decent sound output. Keep in mind that the location of the speaker is on the lower backside and you can easily cover it with your hand well being on a call. When it comes to connectivity options and sensors, the most recent is usually used, however, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sensors are a little outdated. The device, unfortunately, lacks a fingerprint scanner but it has a face unlock for security.
