According to new reports, a new Samsung foldable phone patent has been granted by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). It is a global body that lists a variety of patent applications that are filed by companies around the world. The patent showcases a foldable smartphone design. But it is one that goes beyond the seemingly usual foldable phone renditions that we see so far. It is an electronic device with a display “having a plurality of states and method of controlling the same.” The patent filing released yesterday by WIPO.

According to the patent application via LetsGoDigital, IT shows off a double-folding smartphone with two hinges and three displays which can fold into a smaller Z-shaped device. When unfolded, the screen size on offer is almost the same as a small tablet making it larger than what the Galaxy Z Fold 3 currently offers.

Furthermore, in the patent, one part of the multi-fold screen is the main display and houses an in-display fingerprint sensor. The phone’s internals are also in three parts. The circuit boards and batteries are inside the front and rear folding parts leaving the middle section free. The patent sketch also reveals a triple rear camera setup, an SD card slot, a HDMI port, and a USB-C connector.

Now, you should note, it is unlikely that this foldable design might launch or commercialise soon or even see the light of the day. Now, the patent is likely an early, experimental take on what a device could be.
