This marks a notable shift for Google, releasing their operating system 2–3 months ahead of the usual schedule. Moreover, the eligible devices for Android 16 includes both AOSP and Pixel devices, with release on the same day. The release date has been moved up to ensure Android 16 is ready for new partner devices by fall. A June launch allows devices released in July, August, and September to come pre-installed with the latest Android version.

Expected Features

Now, let’s take a look at the key features of the Android 16 update for the eligible devices:

  • Health Records API: The Health Connect preview unveils APIs designed to handle health records in the FHIR format. This initial version enables apps to access and update medical data, provided users grant explicit consent.
  • Embedded Photo Picker: The new photo picker lets users share only selected images and videos with apps, instead of giving access to their entire media library. This feature enhances security by eliminating the need for broad permission requests.
  • Privacy Sandbox: Android 16 introduces the newest iteration of the Privacy Sandbox, designed to bolster privacy safeguards.
