Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime

The Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime is a budget phone with a huge brand name propelling it in the fierce budget market. Priced at ₹10,990, the phone does not have a striking design, and it does seem lacking in its interiors.

While it has a good battery backup, the phone fails in all other aspects to be considered – it offers boring design, poor performance, unappealing display, and sub-par cameras. It fails to pick up anything that might set it apart from the competition and is not a recommended model.

The Galaxy On7 Prime comes with a quite strong metal unibody. It is designed to be grippy and comfortable to hold. Due to the smooth metal back, the phone has not turned out to be a fingerprint magnet. However, the glass used on the front does attract smudges, like the J7 prime from 2016. The 2.5D curved glass fits well with the phone, making it look solid.

The Galaxy On7 Prime comes with a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is quite dated, with many phones moving to 18:9 or 19:9 aspect ratios. It is a 5.5 inch IPS TFT LCD screen which is Full HD. The colours are sharp, and you can see the text well, though you do not get the beautiful AMOLED screen effect that Samsung is famous for. The phone also lacks the ambient light, which is quite disappointing as brightness needs to be adjusted manually, which is quite a task.

The Galaxy On7 Prime uses the dated octa-core Exynos 7870 chipset which has been used in Samsung phones since 2016. It has 3GB and 4GB RAM variants. It works decently, but you can feel the lack of proper fluidity while working on this phone. Switching between portrait to landscape is not easy, and there are stutters during animations. Touch response is also not responsive all the time. Gameplay is, however, better with heavy titles like Asphalt 8 running smoothly at default settings.

The primary rear camera comes with a 13MP sensor and an f/1.9 aperture. Autofocus is slow, even when ideal light conditions present itself. The camera tends to lag, and you need to be steady to keep the focus. Landscape pictures have the right amount of details, though bright light messes with the exposure level. Macros turn out to be quite good though the camera fails to capture accurate colours, especially if there are subtle gradients to it. In low light, the autofocus is even slower, and the pictures turn out to be very noisy. The video comes at 1080p and has suitable lighting to it. The video quality is just about average, and there is no stabilization in it. On the front, the 13MP camera has the same aperture and can click good photos in daylight, but it struggles in low-light conditions. The screen flash is present, but it is not very useful. There is bokeh mode called Selfie Focus, but it is inadequate.

The Galaxy On7 Prime comes with a decent 3300mAh battery which can last for an entire day with light to moderate use. Even using heavy tasks does not drop the battery to a significant degree. However, the phone does not have fast charging, and can take about 3 hours to go from 0 to 100%.

Overall, the  Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime is not a compelling phone. It is a mediocre mid-range phone with a stuttery performance, poor camera, and dated display. The only positive point of this phone is the battery, but that cannot be the be-all of a smartphone in a competitive market. The phone is not recommended to any user, including Samsung fans.
