Review Summary

Tecno has been doing well in India with their recent smartphones and the latest Tecno Pova 4 joins the market as well. The price to performance ratio of Tecno phones is really good and the overall phones are impressive.

People are slowly trusting the brand as well and their phones are becoming popular in India. The all-new Tecno Pova 4 packs a ton of features for its price. The performance of the phone is handled by a MediaTek Helio G99 which is great at this price. It has a huge 6000mAh battery paired with 18W fast charging.

You get a 90Hz IPS LCD display and not an AMOLED display. Surely the brand has to cut corners somewhere. Note that there’s 5G support, it’s a 4G phone. So, is it worth spending 12K on this? Let’s find out in this Tecno Pova 4 review.

Tecno Pova 4 Specs at a glance

Tecno Pova 4 Design and Build

The Tecno Pova 4 looks really stylish and modern at the first glance. The phone comes in two colour options – grey and blue. I have the latter for the review. You get a plastic back with matte finish that shimmers when light falls on it.

Tecno Pova 4 Design

The matte finish helps to keep fingerprints away. However, the area near the camera has a glossy finish and is prone to fingerprints. No matter what, it does seem to catch eyes from far.

The frames are also made of plastic and offers a good grip in hand. The in-hand feel is like any other budget smartphone in the market. The camera lenses on the back protrude a little which makes the phone wobble when placed on a flat surface.

It’s not very sleek at 8.7 mm thickness and neither lightweight, weighing about 212.5 grams. The big battery packed inside can be the reason behind this but anyways I did not have any problem in using the phone. The phone comes with an IPX2 rating which protects it from water splashes to some extent.

Talking about ports and button placements, the right side has the power button along with the volume buttons. The left has the SIM card tray while the top s totally clean. Lastly, the bottom side houses the primary speaker, mic, Type-C port and 3.5mm audio jack.

Tecno Pova 4 Camera

Cameras are not really a strong point on budget phones and the brands also don’t put a lot of effort into it. The same is the case with Tecno Pova 4. It features a dual camera setup on the back which includes a 50MP main camera and an AI lens. The front side has an 8MP selfie camera housed inside the punch-hole cutout.

Tecno Pova 4 Camera

The main camera takes good shots in daylight. The details were good and the images looked sharp. The colour accuracy was also decent. By default, it captures images in 12.5MP but there is a dedicated 50MP mode in the camera app.

A picture taken in 50MP mode doesn’t really look better than the default image unless you try to zoom in and see the difference. Low light shots are just ok. The images were not very clear and were packed with noise. You get a dedicated Super Night Mode which helps to brighten up the area but the images were still noisy.

Coming over to the front, the 8MP lens captures decent selfies. The skin tones were close to natural and the details were fine in daylight conditions. Portrait selfies could have been better. The background blur was fine but it used to blue the hair and corners of my ears sometimes.

The phone can record 1080p videos at 30fps using the main and front cameras. The video quality is good and the colours look good as well. There’s also an Ultra Steady mode which reduces the shakiness while recording videos.

Tecno Pova 4 Battery and Charging

Tecno Pova 4 packs a huge 6000mAh battery inside which is more than what other phones usually offer in this price range. There’s no doubt that it offers a great battery life. You can easily use the phone for two days if you are a casual user.

A heavy user can still use it for more than a day. I got more than 7 hours of screen on time which is very impressive. My usage involved some Instagram scrolling, playing games, texting and taking pictures. Overall a big thumbs up for the battery backup.

Coming over to charging, the phone supports 18W of fast charging. The 18W fast takes more than two hours to fully charge the phone from 0 to 100 per cent. Yes I know it’s not really fast but I don’t expect much at this price point.

Tecno Pova 4 Display

The Tecno Pova 4 is not very good in terms of display. The phone features a 6.82 inches IPS LCD display which is not bad but what makes it below average is the HD+ resolution. Infinix should have at least offered an FHD+ resolution display.

Tecno Pova 4 Display

As it’s a big display, content consumption doesn’t look very good on this HD+ display. I watched a couple of videos on YouTube and the content didn’t seem very detailed and crisp. There are many phones at this price that offer an IPS display but they have an FHD+ resolution.

Good thing is that it has a 90Hz refresh rate which makes the overall experience a little bit more smoother. The sunlight eligibility is good on cloudy days but not very good on a sunny day.

Tecno-Pova-4 display quality

Don’t get me wrong here, it’s a decent display for an average user who just uses the phone for texting, making calls or taking pictures. But if you like to binge-watch web series or play games for long durations, this display might not offer you the best experience.

You get Widevine L1 support but no support for HDR so you can’t watch HDR content on YouTube. The bezels are thin on all sides except for the chin, which is thicker. Lastly, there’s a punch hole cut out on the top which doesn’t spoil the experience while watching videos.

Tecno Pova 4 Performance and Software

Tecno Pova 4 does not disappoint when it comes to performance. It is powered by a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset which is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. You can also expand the RAM to 13GB by using the MemFusion technology which allots the internal storage as the RAM.

Tecno Pova 4 Performance

Not a very useful feature and doesn’t really bring any change in real-life usage. Anyways, the Tecno Pova 4 easily handles the everyday tasks. I used the phone for taking pictures, texting on WhatsApp, scrolling through Instagram and playing games. Everything was smooth with no major lags or shutters.

Talking about gaming, I played Garena Free Fire and Call of Duty Mobile on it. Garena Free Fire ran smoothly on high settings while the Call of Duty ran well on medium-low settings. There were some lags and frame drops like you see on any other budget phone but still I enjoyed playing on it for the most part.

Tecno Pova 4 Gaming Performance

The phone also got warm after half an hour of gaming. It is good for casual gaming but if you like doing hardcore gaming, look somewhere else.

The Tecno Pova 4 runs on HiOS 12 skin which is based on Android 12. Sad to see that Tecno has still launched the phone with Android 12 when the latest Android 13 has been out there in the market for some time now.

Other than that, the HiOS 12 comes with a bunch of useful features like dual apps, call recording, multi-window support and more. On the other hand, the phone is packed with pre-installed bloatware as expected. Good thing is that you can uninstall most of them from the settings.

Tecno Pova 4 Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics

The Tecno Pova 4 comes with dual speakers for a stereo sound effect, one located at the bottom while the earpiece acts as the second one. The audio quality is decent and loud as well. It even has our beloved 3.5mm audio jack so just plug in your earphones and enjoy.

Tecno Pova 4 Audio

The Tecno Pova 4 is a 4G phone and does not support 5G. This is one of the major drawbacks of the phone. Other connectivity features include: Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth, GPS and even NFC. Seeing NFC support at this budget is really impressive.

The phone features a side mounted fingerprint scanner which quickly unlocks the phone. It was pretty accurate and responsive. Alternatively, you can also use the face unlock feature which also works well in daylight but struggles in low light.

Verdict

The Tecno Pova 4 is a really impressive phone for its price tag. The Helio G99 chipset easily handles everyday tasks and even intensive apps and some casual gaming. You get plenty of RAM for multitasking and good storage capacity for the long run.

Another good thing about the phone is its massive 6000mAh battery which will easily give you two days of battery backup. The 18W fast charging isn’t really very fast when it comes to charging this huge battery but it’s better than 10W at least.

The only thing that it lacks behind is the display. They could have offered an AMOLED display or at least an FHD+ resolution for a better display experience. Nonetheless, the Tecno Pova 4 is a stylish option for heavy users who scroll through their phones all day and don’t care about 5G connectivity.
