  • In a major boost to phone security, India’s top telecom companies now introduce the CNAP feature: Caller Name Presentation. This new tool displays the verified name of incoming callers directly on your screen, helping millions avoid fraud and spam calls. Reliance Jio leads the charge, while Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and BSNL follow suit in select regions. Directed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), this feature uses official KYC data for reliable identification, making it a powerful weapon against rising telecom scams.

    • Reliance Jio: The CNAP feature is now live in West Bengal, Kerala, Bihar, UP East, Rajasthan, Punjab, Assam, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
    • Bharti Airtel: Users see this feature in West Bengal, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.
    • Vodafone Idea (Vi): The service runs fully in Maharashtra, with partial rollout in Tamil Nadu.
    • BSNL: Operators test this feature on a trial basis in West Bengal.

This phased approach ensures smooth implementation, with nationwide expansion expected soon.

Beware Of Silent Calls: DoT Issues Urgent Warning

As the CNAP feature helps identify genuine callers, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) alerts users about “silent calls.” These occur when you answer a call but hear nothing on the other end.

    Scammers use silent calls to:

    • Verify if your number is active.
    • Add confirmed numbers to lists for advanced phishing or fraud attacks.

The DoT stresses that these are not network errors but deliberate tactics. Users should block such numbers immediately and report them on the Sanchar Saathi portal. This helps authorities track and block fraudsters, protecting everyone.

The CNAP feature rollout marks a game-changer for safer communication in India. By showing verified names from official records – unlike crowd-sourced apps, it builds trust and reduces scam risks. Stay vigilant, use these new tools, and report suspicious activity to make phone calls secure again.
